Rankings—Pete Alonso of the Mets rejoins the Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Alonso (HR 2B 2-5 R 3BI in the 7-2 win over the Phillies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 13.2 for the season, 10th among all players and increasing his lead among NL batters, ahead of second-place Mookie Betts of the Dodgers (9.0).

This is Alonso’s fourth stint on Box-Toppers’ top 10 list. Previously, he was among the top 10 from May 19 to May 25, rejoining May 27, taking the overall lead in first place from June 4 to June 8, and stayed on the top 10 list through June 28. He rejoined the list Aug. 1, until he was displaced Aug. 16.

Alonso is the only batter among the top 10 players. (Shohei Ohtani of the Angels ranks second and has earned 4.0 of his 18.0 points as a batter, but does not qualify to rank among batters since he’s earned the overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.)

The last batter to be among the top 10 players to finish a season is Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers, who had 16.9 points in 2013, eighth overall. In the decade from 2000 to 2009, batters finished among Box-Toppers’ top 10 overall players 23 times. But Cabrera is the only batter to finish in the top 10 since 2010.

Alonso’s 13.2 Box-Toppers points is now the highest single-season total for a batter since 2017, when two players had higher point totals—Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs (15.5) and Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins (14.2).

Pete Alonso of the Mets is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s win over the Phillies.

Notable—Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman becomes the 30th player this season to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Gausman (7IP 4H 0R BB 7K W in the 4-0 win over the Yankees) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.7 for the season, 20th among all players and eighth among AL pitchers.

This is his fourth season with 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points. His best season was 2021 with the Giants when he had 13.7 points, 11th among NL pitchers.

Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s win over the Yankees.

Also notable—Two other Friday Player of the Game winners also have more than 10.0 Box-Toppers points for the season:

Dodgers pitcher Tyler Anderson is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s win over the Marlins.

  • Dodgers pitcher Tyler Anderson (7IP 5H R 3BB 6K ND in the 2-1 win over the Marlins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 11.7 for the season, 14th among all players and ninth among NL pitchers.

  • Guardians pitcher Triston McKenzie (7IP 6H 2R 0BB 14K W in the 5-2 win over the White Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 11.0 for the season, 19th among all players and seventh among AL pitchers.

Scoring—Sandoval earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Mikolas earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Santander and Montero each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
