2021-2022  leaders

Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani has more Box-Toppers points over the past two seasons than any other player.

Ohtani has earned 40.8 Box-Toppers points over 2021 and 2022. He ranked second among all players in 2021 with 24.7 Box-Toppers points and 12th among all players in 2021 with 16.1 points. Ohtani ranked second among American League pitchers in 2022 and third among AL pitchers in 2021.

Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias ranked second overall and first among National League players with 38.5 Box-Toppers points over 2021-22. In 2021, Urias ranked fourth overall with 19.1 points (third among NL pitchers) and in 2022, he ranked seventh overall with 19.4 points (fourth among NL pitchers).

The 2021 leader in Box-Toppers points, Max Scherzer, who was then with the Dodgers, finishes sixth overall over the past two seasons with 35.1 points, fourth among NL pitchers. Scherzer led all players in 2021 with 25.1 points and was 52nd overall in 2022 with 10.0 points with the Mets, 24th among NL pitchers.

The 2022 leader in Box-Toppers points, Justin Verlander of the Astros, finishes seventh among AL pitchers over the past two years with 26.0 points. He earned no points in 2021, sitting out the season recovering from Tommy John surgery and ranked first overall in 2022 with 26.0 points. Verlander has signed with the Mets for the 2023 season.

Gerrit Cole of the Yankees led AL pitchers in 2021 with 22.4 Box-Toppers points, second overall in 2021. In 2022, he had 15.4 Box-Toppers points, eighth among AL pitchers. Over 2021-22, his 37.8 points is fourth among all players and second among AL pitchers, behind Ohtani’s 40.8. If the 9.0 points Ohtani earned as a designated hitter over the past two seasons are subtracted from his total—giving him 32.8 points—Cole would have the most points earned by an AL pitchers over 2021-22 and Ohtani would be ranked third.

Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins led NL pitchers in 2022 with 21.1 Box-Toppers points, third overall in 2022. He had 9.7 points in 2021, 27th among NL pitchers. His 30.8 points over 2021-22 is eighth among NL pitchers.

Jose Ramirez of the Guardians leads AL batters over the past two seasons with 24.7 Box-Toppers points. He led AL batters in 2021 with 13.0 points and ranked second among AL batters in 2022 with 11.7 points. The 2022 leader among AL batters, Aaron Judge of the Yankees (13.2 points), ranked second among AL batters over 2021-22 with 22.2 points after earning 9.0 in 2021, fourth among AL batters.

Ohtani, notably, is not included among AL batters, even though he played 157 games as a batter (153 as a designated hitter) and 28 games as a starting pitcher. While Ohtani had more Box-Toppers points than Ramirez, he did not qualify to rank among batters because he earned the overwhelming majority of his Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors as a pitcher in 2022. Ohtani earned just four of his 17 Player of the Game honors as a designated hitter. To rank at a position, a player must have more than 25 percent of their Player of the Game honors at that position—Ohtani has 23.5 percent of his honors as a batter.

Pete Alonso of the Mets leads NL batters over the past two seasons with 17.9 Box-Toppers points. He had 3.0 points in 2021, 63rd among NL batters and 14.9 in 2022, first among NL batters. The 2021 leader among NL batters, Nick Castellanos of the Reds (11.5 points), earned 0.0 points in 2022 with the Phillies. His 11.5 points over 2021-22 is 20th among NL batters.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
