Rays pitcher Shane McClanahan is Thursday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to first in season player rankings.

Also Thursday, two other players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earn Player of the Game honors—Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani rises to third place and Braves pitcher Max Fried rises to 10th place.

Player of the Day—McClanahan struck out nine over eight innings, allowing one run (none earned), two hits and one walk, in the 2-1 win over the Cardinals.

McClanahan earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 10.7 for the season, rising from sixth to first place in season player rankings, passing previous leader Pete Alonso of the Mets (9.2). McClanahan also rises to first place among American League pitchers, passing previous leader Justin Verlander of the Astros (9.0).

McClanahan is the first player to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points for 2022. In 2021, there were 49 players who had 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points. This is also the first time in his career McClanahan has led Box-Toppers season player rankings. He had 4.7 Box-Toppers points in his 2021 rookie season, 71st among AL pitchers.

Max Muncy of the Dodgers is Thursday’s Box-Toppers NL Player of the Day.

National League Player of the Day—Max Muncy of the Dodgers hit a three-run homer and doubled in the 11-9 win over the White Sox. Muncy went 2-for-5, scoring twice and driving in five runs.

Muncy earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and ranks 40th among NL batters.

MJ Melendez of the Royals is Thursday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—MJ Melendez of the Royals homered and went 1-for-2, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 7-5 win over the Orioles.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Thursday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Max Muncy.

Rankings—In addition to McClanahan, two other player rose in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game winners Thursday:

Ohtani, who also qualifies to be ranked as a batter (having earned three of his six total Player of the Game honors as a designated hitter), extends his lead among AL batters ahead of second-place Ty France of the Mariners (6.0). It is Ohtani’s first Player of the Game honor since falling from his Box-Toppers season points lead June 2. He last earned Player of the Game honors a month ago on May 9.

  • Braves pitcher Max Fried (6IP 8H R 0BB 8K W in the 3-1 win over the Pirates) rises to 10th place overall with 8.0 Box-Toppers points, fourth among NL pitchers.

Debut—Richie Palacios of the Guardians made his Box-Toppers debut Thursday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Palacios (2B 1-1 0R 2BI in the 8-4 win over the Athletics) made his Major League debut April 25 and was playing in his 20th career game.
