Shawn Plank July 17, 2025

The Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays have the most players among the top 100 in Box-Toppers’ 2025 player rankings at the All-Star break.

Both teams each have six players among the top 100.

Three other teams each have five players in the top 100—the Toronto Blue Jays, the New York Mets and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Meanwhile, the top two teams in Box-Toppers rankings—the Detroit Tigers and the Philadephia Phillies—each have four players among the top 100, tied for the sixth-most.

White Sox have no players in top 100

The Chicago White Sox have no players among the top 100, the only team without a representative. The White Sox’ highest-ranked player is starting pitcher Adrian Houser, whose 4.7 points ranks 108th overall.

Two teams have just one player on the top 100:

  • Colorado Rockies—99th-ranked catcher and designated hitter Hunter Goodman with 4.9 points. (The Rockies are Box-Toppers’ lowest-ranked team.)

  • Baltimore Orioles—81st-ranked starting pitcher Charlie Morton with 5.0 points. (Last year at the 2024 All-Star break, the Orioles had six players among Box-Toppers’ top 100 players, second-most among all teams.)

Top 100 breakdown by position

Pitchers comprise the overwhelming majority of top 100 players—there are 71 pitchers (63 starters, five closers and three middle relievers) in the top 100 list and only 29 batters.

Since 2015, that’s below the 72.4 average number of pitchers in the top 100 at midseason and well below the record-shattering 87 pitchers that were among the top 100 in 2024 at the All-Star break.

Here is a look at the number of pitchers among the midseason top 100 in recent seasons:

  • In 2015, there were 74 pitchers among the top 100 players at the All-Star break (67 starters and seven closers).

  • In 2016, there were 65 pitchers (64 starters and one closer).

  • In 2017, there were 60 pitchers (55 starters, four closers and one middle reliever).

  • In 2018, there were 72 pitchers (64 starters, six closers and two middle relievers).

  • In 2019, there were 77 pitchers (70 starters and seven closers).

  • In 2020, there was no All-Star Game (pandemic), so no actual All-Star break.

  • In 2021, there were 77 pitchers (74 starters and three closers).

  • In 2022, there were 72 pitchers (68 starters, three closers and one middle reliever).

  • In 2023, there were 68 pitchers (64 starters, three closers and one middle reliever).

  • In 2024, there were 87 pitchers (79 starters and eight closers).

Here is the position-by-position breakdown of players (if a player played more than one position, then their primary position—the one at which they most often earned Player of the Game honors—is generally used):

  • 63—Starting pitcher

  • 11—Outfield

  • 6—Catcher

  • 6—Designated hitter

  • 5—Closing pitcher

  • 3—Third base

  • 3—Middle reliever

  • 1—First base

  • 1—Second base

  • 1—Shortstop

Interestingly, six catchers are among the top 100 in 2025 after no catchers were among the top 100 at midseason 2024. The highest-ranking catcher in 2024 was Cal Raleigh of the Mariners, whose 4.2 points ranked 112th.

Here are the six catchers on Box-Toppers’ 2025 midseason top 100 list:

  • 58. Carson Kelly, Cubs 6.0

  • 66. Salvador Perez, Royals 5.5

  • 83. Cal Raleigh, Mariners 5.0

  • 91. Ryan Jeffers, Twins 5.0

  • 94. Logan O'Hoppe, Angels 5.0

  • 99. Hunter Goodman, Rockies 4.9

Newcomers among top 100 players

There are three players on the top 100 list who have made their Box-Toppers debut in 2025, each having earned Player of the Game honors for the first time in their career this season:

  • 22. Starting pitcher Will Warren, Yankees, 8.4 points, 11th among AL pitchers.

  • 60. Designated hitter Agustín Ramírez, Marlins, 6.0 points, fourth among NL designated hitters.

  • 69. Left fielder Isaac Collins, Brewers, 5.5 points, fifth among NL outfielders.

All three of those players’ rookie status is intact for 2025, meaning all would qualify for Rookie of the Year awards. These three players making their Box-Toppers debut this season are among the 96 total who have earned their first career Player of the Game honor so far in 2025.

How last year’s leaders are faring

Among the four main category leaders in Box-Toppers points for the full 2024 season, two are currently leading their category:

  • Zack Wheeler of the Phillies, who led all players and all NL pitchers in 2024 with 21.4, currently leads all players and all NL pitchers with 18.1.

  • Tarik Skubal of the Tigers, who led AL pitchers in 2024 with 21.1, currently leads AL pitchers with 14.4 points.

Here’s how 2024 batting leaders are faring:

  • Aaron Judge of the Yankees, who led AL batters with 13.0 Box-Toppers points, 21st overall, ranks sixth among AL batters at midseason with 5.0 points, 74th overall. (Judge had 8.5 points at the 2024 All-Star break, 23rd overall.)

  • Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers, who led NL batters with 11.0 Box-Toppers points, 41st overall, ranks 16th among NL batters at midseason with 4.5 points, 111th overall, outside the top 100. (Ohtani had 4.0 points at the 2024 All-Star break, 114th overall and 13th among NL batters.)
