Both the Rays and Rangers have seven players on the top 100 list (which actually consists of 102 players because of a tie for 100th place). Both American League teams are also among the top three in Box-Toppers team rankings at the All-Star break—the Rays rank first and the Rangers rank third, second among AL teams. All teams except for the Kansas City Royals have at least one player on the midseason list. (The Royals rank 30th and last in Box-Toppers team rankings.)

Five teams are tied for the next-most players on the list with five each—the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and Seattle Mariners. Seven teams each have four players on the list, including Box-Toppers’ top-ranked National League team, the Atlanta Braves, who rank second overall. The other teams with four players are the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, Milwaukee Brewers, Minnesota Twins and Toronto Blue Jays.

The top 100 player list is led by Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani with 13.9 Box-Toppers points. Braves pitcher Spencer Strider, who leads National League players with 11.7 Box-Toppers points, ranks third overall.

Tampa Bay Rays

Here are the seven Rays players on the list, with their overall rank shown, their position and their season Box-Toppers point total:

  • 8. Shane McClanahan, starting pitcher, 9.7

  • 37. Drew Rasmussen, starting pitcher, 6.7

  • 42. Isaac Paredes, third base, 6.2

  • 46. Randy Arozarena, left fielder, 6.0

  • 78. Yandy Diaz, first base, 5.0

  • 79. Zach Eflin, starting pitcher, 5.0

  • 93. Jason Adam, closing pitcher, 4.7

Rasmussen got off to a fast start but was injured in May and is now on the injured list, out for the season, recovering from elbow surgery.

The Rays rank first in Box-Toppers team rankings with its players accumulating 72.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023, including a combined 43.3 by its seven players in the top 100. The Rays have ranked first in each of the 14 Box-Toppers weekly team rankings reports this season, but their lead narrowed at the All-Star break, as the second-place Atlanta Braves closed in. Also, for the first time this season at the All-Star break, the Rays did not have the best winning percentage among teams, as the Braves moved past them.

Texas Rangers

Here are the seven Rangers players on the list, with their overall rank shown, their position and their season Box-Toppers point total:

  • 13. Nathan Eovaldi, starting pitcher, 8.7

  • 22. Jacob deGrom, starting pitcher, 7.7

  • 54. Andrew Heaney, starting pitcher, 5.7

  • 68. Corey Seager, shortstop, 5.2

  • 75. Adolis García, right fielder, 5.0

  • 88. Marcus Semien, second base, 4.7

  • 89. Jon Gray, starting pitcher, 4.7

deGrom got off to a fast start but was injured in April and underwent Tommy John surgery in June, sidelining him for the rest of the season and at least half of 2024.

The Rangers rank third in Box-Toppers team rankings, second among AL teams, with its players accumulating 68.1 Box-Toppers points in 2023, including a combined 41.7 by its seven players in the list.

Royals, Athletics have fewest players in top 100

The Kansas City Royals are the only team without a representative among the top 100 players. The top-ranked Royals player is starting pitcher Brady Singer with 2.0 Box-Toppers points, 257th among all players. The Royals rank 30th and last among all teams with 25.5 Box-Toppers points.

The Oakland Athletics have the next-fewest players on the list, with one—84th-ranked Ryan Noda, first base, with 5.0 Box-Toppers points. The Athletics rank 29th in Box-Toppers team rankings with 27.5 Box-Toppers points.

Top 100 breakdown by position

Most players on the list are starting pitchers. Here is the position-by-position breakdown of players (if a player played more than one position, then their primary position—the one at which they most often earned Player of the Game honors—is generally used):

  • 64—Starting pitcher

  • 17—Outfield

  • 4—First base

  • 4—Third base

  • 4—Second base

  • 3—Closing pitcher

  • 3—Shortstop

  • 1—Designated hitter

  • 1—Middle relief

  • 0—Catcher

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels, who ranks first overall, is not included in the position-by-position breakdown here. He is both a designated hitter and starting pitcher and this season so far has won Player of the Game honors six times each at both positions. Generally, it’s been easier to place Ohtani in a more specific category, especially the past two seasons, when he finished both 2021 and 2022 classified solely as a pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors at that position. But this season, so far, he has been more balanced and in fact, has earned more of his points as a batter (7.2) than a pitcher (6.7).

There are no catchers among the top 100 players for 2023. The highest-ranking catcher is Sean Murphy of the Braves, whose 4.0 Box-Toppers points is 118th among all players.

Most top 100 players are pitchers

There are 68 total pitchers among the top 100 players (64 starters, three closers and one middle reliever). (The total number would be 69 if Ohtani is included.) That’s the fewest number of pitchers on the top 100 at the All-Star break since 2017, when there were 60. Here is a look at the number of pitchers among the midseason top 100 in recent seasons:

  • In 2015, there were 74 pitchers among the top 100 players at the All-Star break (67 starters and seven closers).

  • In 2016, there were 65 pitchers (64 starters and one closer).

  • In 2017, there were 60 pitchers (55 starters, four closers and one middle reliever).

  • In 2018, there were 72 pitchers (64 starters, six closers and two middle relievers).

  • In 2019, there were 77 pitchers (70 starters and seven closers).

  • In 2020, there was no All-Star Game (pandemic), so no actual All-Star break.

  • In 2021, there were 77 pitchers (74 starters and three closers).

  • In 2022, there were 72 pitchers (68 starters, three closers and one middle reliever).

Newcomers among top 100 players

There are 11 players on the top 100 list who have made their Box-Toppers debut in 2023, each having earned Player of the Game honors for the first time in their career this season:

  • 10. Mariners starting pitcher Bryce Miller, 9.4 Box-Toppers points, fifth among AL pitchers.

  • 14. Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga, 8.7 points, seventh among NL pitchers.

  • 26. Red Sox center fielder Jarren Duran, 7.5 points, third among AL batters.

  • 35. Reds starting pitcher Andrew Abbott, 7.0 points, 15th among NL pitchers.

  • 51. Marlins starting pitcher Eury Perez, 6.0 points, 22nd among NL pitchers.

  • 84. Athletics first baseman Ryan Noda, 5.0 points, 14th among AL batters.

  • 84. Mariners starting pitcher Bryan Woo, 5.0 points, 34th among AL pitchers.

  • 95. Guardians starting pitcher Tanner Bibee, 4.7 points, 38th among AL pitchers.

  • 100. Nationals left fielder Stone Garrett, 4.5 points, 15th among NL batters.

  • 100. Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, 4.5 points, 15th among NL batters.

  • 100. Red Sox left fielder Masataka Yoshida, 4.5 points, 17th among AL batters.

Ties in Box-Toppers player rankings are generally broken by giving the tie-breaking edge to players with the higher previous season Box-Toppers point total. But since these players have no previous season totals, players with the same point totals remain tied, including two in 84th place (Noda and Woo) and the three tied for 100th place (Garrett, Tovar and Yoshida).

These 11 players making their Box-Toppers debut this season are among the 112 total who have earned their first career Player of the Game honor so far in 2023.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
