Top 100 breakdown by position

Most players in the top 100 are starting pitchers. Here is the position-by-position breakdown of players (if a player played more than one position, then their primary position—the one at which they most often earned Player of the Game honors—is used):

  • 68—Starting pitcher

  • 9—First base

  • 7—Outfield

  • 5—Third base

  • 4—Designated hitter

  • 3—Closing pitcher

  • 2—Second base

  • 1—Shortstop

  • 1—Middle relief

  • 0—Catcher

Of note here, Shohei Ohtani of the Angels ranks first overall with 17.0 Box-Toppers points. While he has served as both a starting pitcher and designated hitter this season, Box-Toppers lists him primarily as a starting pitcher because he has won eight of his 11 Player of the Game honors as a starting pitcher this season. Note in the chart elsewhere on this page Top 100 players for 2022 that Ohtani’s position is listed “pi sp dh,” meaning both starting pitcher and designated hitter, but he is included among the 68 starting pitchers, not among the four designated hitters in the top 100.

There are no catchers among the top 100 players for 2022. The highest-ranking catcher is Jonah Heim of the Rangers, whose 4.2 Box-Toppers points is 110th among all players.

There are 72 total pitchers among the top 100 players (68 starters, three closers and one middle reliever). That’s down from 2019 and 2021, when there were 77 total pitchers among the midseason top 100. Here is a look at the number of pitchers among the midseason top 100 in recent seasons:

  • In 2015, there were 74 pitchers among the top 100 players at the All-Star break (67 starters and seven closers).

  • In 2016, there were 65 pitchers (64 starters and one closer).

  • In 2017, there were 60 pitchers (55 starters, four closers and one middle reliever).

  • In 2018, there were 72 pitchers (64 starters, six closers and two middle relievers).

  • In 2019, there were 77 pitchers (70 starters and seven closers).

  • In 2020, there was no All-Star Game (pandemic, as you may recall), so no actual All-Star break.

  • In 2021, there were 77 pitchers (74 starters and three closers).

Newcomers among top 100 players

There are five players on the top 100 list who have made their Box-Toppers debut in 2022, each having earned Player of the Game honors for the first time in their career this season:

  • 31. Mariners center fielder Julio Rodriguez, 7.5 Box-Toppers points, third among AL batters.

  • 58. Cubs starting pitcher Keegan Thompson, 6.0 points, 23rd among NL pitchers.

  • 64. Braves starting pitcher Spencer Strider, 5.7 points, 27th among NL pitchers.

  • 93. Padres starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore, 4.7 points, 39th among NL pitchers.

  • 94. Mariners starting pitcher George Kirby, 4.7 points, 33rd among AL pitchers.

So far this season, 122 players have made their Box-Toppers debut.
