The Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays each have six players on the top 100 list, tied for the most of any team. All teams have at least one player among the top 100. The Milwaukee Brewers, currently Box-Toppers’ top-ranked team with 67.2 accumulated Box-Toppers points in 2021 have three players on the list. The defending World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers have four players on the list.

Five teams are tied for the next-most players among the top 100 with five each—the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants.

The list is led by Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom with 16.7 Box-Toppers points. Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole ranks second overall and leads American League players with 15.4.

Here are the six White Sox players in the All-Star break top 100, with their overall rank shown, their position and their season Box-Toppers point total:

  • 22. Lance Lynn, starting pitcher 8.7

  • 46. Carlos Rodon, starting pitcher, 6.7

  • 47. Dylan Cease, starting pitcher, 6.7

  • 62. Jose Abreu, first baseman, 5.5

  • 83. Lucas Giolito, starting pitcher, 4.7

  • 90. Michael Kopech, starting pitcher, 4.7

Here are the six Rays players in the All-Star break top 100, with their overall rank shown, their position and their season Box-Toppers point total:

  • 5. Tyler Glasnow, starting pitcher, 12.7

  • 30. Ryan Yarbrough, starting pitcher, 7.7

  • 59. Josh Fleming, starting pitcher, 5.7

  • 67. Michael Wacha, starting pitcher, 5.1

  • 76. Rich Hill, starting pitcher, 5.0

  • 79. Brandon Lowe, second baseman, 5.0

Here are the six Blue Jays players in the All-Star break top 100, with their overall rank shown, their position and their season Box-Toppers point total:

  • 55. Robbie Ray, starting pitcher, 6.7

  • 61. Steven Matz, starting pitcher, 6.0

  • 66. Marcus Semien, second baseman, 5.2

  • 68. Hyun Jin Ryu, starting pitcher, 5.0

  • 84. Ross Stripling, starting pitcher 4.7

  • 93. Randal Grichuk, designated hitter, 4.5

All teams have at least one representative on the top 100 list, but six teams have just one:

  • Diamondbacks (Madison Bumgarner, starting pitcher, ranked 54th with 6.0 points)

  • Orioles (John Means, starting pitcher, ranked 53rd with 6.0 points)

  • Royals (Mike Minor, starting pitcher, ranked 65th with 5.4 points)

  • Pirates (Bryan Reynolds, centerfielder, ranked 34th with 7.0 points)

  • Mariners (Chris Flexen, starting pitcher, ranked 29th with 8.0 points)

  • Rangers (Kyle Gibson, starting pitcher, ranked 43rd with 6.7 points)

Most players in the top 100 are starting pitchers. Here is the position-by-position breakdown of players (if a player played more than one position, then their primary position—the one at which they most often earned Player of the Game honors—is used):

  • 74—Starting pitcher

  • 5—Second base

  • 5—Third base

  • 4—Shortstop

  • 4—Outfielder

  • 3—First base

  • 3—Closing pitcher

  • 2—Designated hitter

  • 0—Catcher

  • 0—Middle reliever

Of note here, Shohei Ohtani of the Angels ranks 24th overall with 8.4 Box-Toppers points. While he has served as both a starting pitcher and designated hitter this season, Box-Toppers lists him primarily as a starting pitcher because he has won four of his six Player of the Game honors as a starting pitcher this season. Note in the chart elsewhere on this page (Top 100 players for 2021) that Ohtani’s position is listed “pi sp dh,” meaning both starting pitcher and designated hitter, but he is included among the 74 starting pitchers, not among the two designated hitters in the top 100 (15th-ranked J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox with 9.7 points and 93rd-ranked Randal Grichuk of the Blue Jays with 4.5 points).

Buster Posey of the Giants is the highest-ranking catcher. With 4.0 Box-Toppers points, he ranks 124th overall.

Scott Barlow of the Royals is the highest-ranking player who serves primarily as a middle reliever. With 4.0 Box-Toppers points, he ranks 119th overall. There are two players with more 2021 Box-Toppers points than Barlow who are listed as middle relievers, though it is not their primary position. They are Matt Barnes of the Red Sox (ranked 78th with 5.0 points, who primarily serves as a closing pitcher) and Josh Fleming of the Rays (ranked 59th with 5.7 points, who primarily serves as a starting pitcher).

There are 77 total pitchers among the top 100 players (74 starters and three closers) which is tied for the most (with 2019) at the All-Star break since we started keeping track of such things back in 2015.

  • In 2015, there were 74 pitchers among the top 100 players at the All-Star break (67 starters and seven closers).

  • In 2016, there were 65 pitchers (64 starters and one closer).

  • In 2017, there were 60 pitchers (55 starters, four closers and one middle reliever).

  • In 2018, there were 72 pitchers (64 starters, six closers and two middle relievers).

  • In 2019, there were also 77 pitchers (70 starters and seven closers).

  • In 2020, there was no All-Star Game (pandemic, as you may recall), so no actual All-Star break.

There are five players on the top 100 list who have made their Box-Toppers debut in 2021, each having earned Player of the Game honors for the first time in their career this season:

  • 29. Mariners starting pitcher Chris Flexen–8.0 Box-Toppers points.

  • 89. Athletics starting pitcher James Kaprielian—4.7 points.

  • 90. White Sox starting pitcher Michael Kopech—4.7 points.

  • 91. Tigers starting pitcher Casey Mize—4.7 points.

  • 92. Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal—4.7 points.

So far this season, 111 players have made their Box-Toppers debut.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
