About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler leads Box-Toppers season player rankings at the All-Star break, the ninth straight week he has led, going back to May 15.

Meanwhile, all category leaders continue their Box-Toppers points leads since the last player rankings report July 3: Tarik Skubal of the Tigers leads American League pitchers, Riley Greene of the Tigers leads AL batters and Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs leads National League batters.

Wheeler leads

Wheeler has 18.1 Box-Toppers points in 2025, picking up 2.0 points since July 3, leading second-place player, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal (14.4 points). He leads NL pitchers ahead of second-place Nick Pivetta of the Padres (13.0 points).

Wheeler led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2024 with 21.4.

American League pitchers

Tarik Skubal of the Tigers leads for the second week with 14.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.7 points since July 3. He leads over second-place AL pitcher Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox (13.1 points).

Skubal ranks second overall.

American League batters

Riley Greene of the Tigers leads AL batters for the eighth week with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points since July 3. He leads ahead of second-place AL batter George Springer of the Blue Jays (8.7 points).

Greene ranks 17th among all players.

National League batters

Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs leads NL batters for the second week with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points since July 3. He leads ahead of second-place Christian Yelich of the Brewers (8.2 points).

Suzuki ranks 21st among all players.

Box-Toppers almanac

Batters won Player of the Game honors in 59 of the 140 games played since the last rankings report July 3 (42.1 percent) with pitchers winning the other 81 (57.9 percent).

Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season increased from July 3 to 39.0 percent (564 times in 1,445 total games). Pitchers have won Player of the Game honors in the other 881 games (61.0 percent).

Batters also had an increase in their share of Box-Toppers points earned this season from 38.8 percent on July 3 to 39.2 percent on July 13 (675.5 points out of 1,721.8 total awarded). Pitchers have won 60.8 percent of all points.

Last year, batters had the lowest share of points compared to pitchers (37.2 percent) in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
