Other facts

Two of the four main category leaders also lead their team in 2024 Box-Toppers points:

  • Overall leader and National League pitching leader Zack Wheeler leads the Phillies with 18.1 points

  • American League pitching leader Tarik Skubal leads the Tigers with 14.4 points.

Both league batting leaders rank second among their team’s players in Box-Toppers points, behind a pitcher, but both lead their team’s batters:

  • AL batting leader Riley Greene leads Tigers batters with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, second among Tigers players behind pitcher Tarik Skubal (14.4). He ranks 17th overall.

  • NL batting leader Seiya Suzuki leads Cubs batters with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, second among Cubs players behind pitcher Matthew Boyd (9.7 points, 14th overall). Suzuki ranks 21st overall.

The player with the highest Box-Toppers point total who is not among his team’s leaders is Phillies pitcher Jesús Luzardo, whose 10.7 Box-Toppers points ranks 11th overall but second among Phillies players, behind pitcher Zack Wheeler (18.1 points, first overall).

The batter with the highest Box-Toppers point total who is not among his team’s leaders is Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs, whose 8.0 points is third among all Cubs players, second among all Cubs batters (behind Suzuki’s 8.5) and third among NL batters.

While pitchers dominate today, batters once had parity

Pitchers in recent years have increasingly won larger shares of Box-Toppers points compared to batters. While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009. (Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.)

Weekly player and team rankings reports

Box-Toppers usually posts player and team rankings on Fridays. However, with the All-Star break, the schedule shifts slightly.

Box-Toppers’ most recent player and team rankings reports were posted earlier this week, after Sunday’s final regular season games before the All-Star break. Since no games have been played since then, those reports are still up-to-date.

Regular season games resume Friday (here are the pitching matchups). Box-Toppers weekly player and team rankings will resume the usual Friday postings next week, July 25.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
