Alonso hit a sixth-inning, three-run homer, as the National League prevailed Tuesday over the American League, after a nine-inning, 6-6 tie was broken with a home run derby-style swing-off. Alonso went 1-for-2, scoring once and driving in three runs.
Alonso’s homer put the National League up 5-0, but the American League came back to tie the game in the ninth inning, 6-6. Rather than play extra innings, the game was decided by a home run derby-style contest in which three batters from each team were each given three swings to hit home runs. The three NL players hit four home runs to the AL’s three.
This is how the swing-off played out:
For the AL, Brent Rooker of the Athletics hit two home runs in his three swings, putting the AL up, 2-0.
For the NL, Kyle Stowers of the Marlins hit one home run, making it a 2-1 AL lead.
For the AL, Randy Arozarena of the Mariners hit one home run, making it a 3-1 AL lead.
For the NL, Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies hit three home runs, putting the NL up 4-3.
For the AL, Jonathan Aranda of the Rays hit no home runs.
Since the NL had already secured the 4-3 lead, the third designated NL batter, Pete Alonso of the Mets did not need to swing.
The swing-off exists outside the regular game box score so is not figured into determining a Box-Toppers Player of the Game winner. And while the game itself ended in a tie, a winner was determined with the tiebreaker, so we select a Player of the Game winner from the NL.
Alonso had a Box-Toppers game score Tuesday of +3.0. One other NL player, Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, who started the game, also had a +3.0 game score Tuesday (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K ND), but in cases of game score ties, batters rank ahead of pitchers. Also, for a pitcher to be considered for Player of the Game honors, they need to pitch at least three innings, earn the win or save, or have a higher Box-Toppers game score and the same or more innings pitched as the pitcher who otherwise would have won Player of the Game honors. Since no NL pitcher pitched more than one inning and since no NL pitcher earned the win or save in this tie game, none of the 13 who pitched for the NL could be considered for Player of the Game honors.
Just three NL batters had positive Box-Toppers game scores Tuesday. In addition to Alonso, they are:
Corbin Carroll of the Diamondbacks with a +2.0 score (HR 1-1 R BI).
Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks with a +1.0 score (2B 1-2 0R 2BI).
Had the American League prevailed in the swing-off, Brent Rooker of the Athletics would have been Box-Toppers Player of the Game with a +3.0 game score (HR 1-1 R 3BI), hitting a seventh-inning, three-run homer.
Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies was named All-Star Game Most Valuable Player for his 3-for-3 performance in the home run swing-off tiebreaker. In the game, Schwarber went 0-for-2 with a -2.0 Box-Toppers game score.
As previously mentioned, Skenes had a +3.0 game score as a starter for the National League. Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, who started for the American League, had a -4.0 game score (1IP 3H 2R 0BB 2K ND). Skubal leads AL players in 2025 with 14.4 Box-Toppers points.
The lowest Box-Toppers game score recorded by either team’s All-Stars was -8.9 by Royals pitcher Kris Bubic, pitching for the AL (0.1IP 2H 3R BB 0K ND). The lowest game score by an NL player was -6.0 by Padres pitcher Adrián Morejón (0IP H 2R BB 0K ND).
Player of the Game Alonso has 7.2 Box-Toppers points in 2025, fifth among NL batters and 40th among all players. No Box-Toppers points are awarded in the All-Star Game.
Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler, who leads all players in 2025 Box-Toppers points with 18.1, did not play. Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs, who leads NL batters with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, was not selected as an All-Star. Riley Greene of the Tigers, who leads AL batters with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Tuesday, recording a -3.0 Box-Toppers game score, lowest among all the game’s batters.
Scoring
Just as All-Star Game statistics don’t count in a player’s regular season statistics, no Box-Toppers points are awarded for the All-Star Game.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
