Yoshinobu Yamamoto is Box-Toppers Player of the Game as the Los Angeles Dodgers complete a dramatic, extra-innings Game 7 comeback Saturday to win the 2025 World Series in seven games over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Yamamoto, normally a starter who came in as a closing pitcher Saturday, won his fifth Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of the 2025 postseason, his third in the Dodgers’ four World Series wins and also won top player honors in back-to-back games, having won as the team’s starting pitcher in Game 6.

Yamamoto won World Series Most Valuable Player honors and was also Box-Toppers top World Series player and postseason top player—his five postseason Player of the Game honors were two more than any other player.

The Dodgers defeated the Blue Jays 5-4 in 11 innings to win the best-of-seven-game series over the Blue Jays, 4-3, winning their second consecutive title.

Yamamoto took the mound with one out in the ninth inning and the score tied, 4-4. He struck out one over 2 2/3 innings, allowing one hit, one walk and he hit one batter with a pitch. He threw 34 pitches Saturday after having thrown 96 in the Game 6 win Friday.

Yamamoto earned 17.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025, seventh among all players, fourth among National League pitchers and most among all World Series players.

Yamamoto recorded a +1.2 Box-Toppers game score to lead all Dodgers. That is the second-lowest Box-Toppers game score to win Player of the Game honors in all 47 postseason games played in 2025. Only one was lower—the +1.0 game score by Ernie Clement of the Blue Jays in the American League Division Series Game 4 on Oct. 8 (2-3 2R 0BI).

Yamamoto has won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in five of his six 2025 postseason appearances, including three in the World Series:

  • NL Wild Card Game 2 over the Reds on Oct. 1 (6.2IP 4H 2R 0ER 2BB 9K W), with a +7.2 Box-Toppers game score.

  • NL Championship Series Game 2 over the Brewers on Oct. 14 (CG 3H R BB 3K W), with a +10.0 Box-Toppers game score.

  • World Series Game 2 on Oct. 25 (CG 4H R 0BB 8K W), with a +11.0 game score.

  • World Series Game 6 on Oct. 31 (6IP 5H R BB 6K W), with a +4.0 game score.

  • World Series Game 7 Saturday, his only postseason relief appearance (2.2IP H 0R BB K W).

He also started in the NL Division Series Game 3 loss against the Phillies Oct. 8 (4IP 6H 3R BB 2K L), recording a -7.0 game score.

Yamamoto is one of eight players who have earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors more than once this postseason and his five are two more than any other player. Two other Dodgers players—Blake Snell and Shohei Ohtani—have won three times. Five other players have won twice: Blue Jays pitcher Trey Yesavage, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Blue Jays, Dodgers pitcher Tyler Glasnow, Jorge Polanco of the Mariners and Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski. Ohtani won two of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher and one as a batter.

Four other Dodgers players had positive Box-Toppers game scores Saturday:

  • Reliever Blake Snell, normally a starter, had a +1.1 game score (1.1IP H 0R BB 2K ND). Snell pitched in the eighth and ninth innings between Emmet Sheehan and Yamamoto.

  • Reliever Emmet Sheehan had a +1.0 game score (1IP 2H 0R 0BB 2K ND). Sheehan pitched the seventh inning between reliever Tyler Glasnow and Snell.

Box-Toppers favored Dodgers over Blue Jays

Though Box-Toppers favored the National League champion Dodgers over the American League champion Blue Jays in the 2025 World Series, the series proved closer than expected.

The Blue Jays were the higher-seeded postseason team, earning home-field advantage, by virtue of winning one more regular season game than the Dodgers—94 vs. 93.

But the Dodgers held Box-Toppers points advantages in key player categories, most notably among starting pitchers who were available for the World Series. The four probable starting pitchers for the Dodgers had 31.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025 compared to 21.1 for the four Blue Jays probable starters. Also, three of the four Dodgers star pitchers were injured much of 2025—Ohtani, Glasnow and Snell—and were peaking in time for the postseason. All three of those starters pitched in Game 7 Saturday, along with Yamamoto, who was the team’s consistent pitching star all season.

The Dodgers also led the Blue Jays in players’ accumulated Box-Toppers points in 2025 with 117.9, fifth overall and third among NL teams. The Blue Jays earned 111.7 Box-Toppers points, 10th overall and fifth among AL teams.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular-season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day. (No Box-Toppers points are awarded in postseason games.)
