About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sánchez leads Box-Toppers player rankings for a fourth consecutive week.
Meanwhile, Bryan Woo of the Mariners rises to lead American League pitchers and batting leaders remain unchanged from last week:
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads National League batters.
Nick Kurtz of the Athletics leads AL batters.
Sánchez leads
Sánchez remains in first place overall with 13.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over Jacob Misiorowski of the Brewers (13.0), who is in second place overall and among NL pitchers.
American League pitchers
Bryan Woo of the Mariners jumps from fifth place last week to first place this week with 10.4 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Gavin Williams of the Guardians, who falls to third place with 9.7 points. Woo leads over second-place José Soriano of the Angels (9.7 points).
Woo ranks fourth overall.
National League batters
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads for the fifth week with 10.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place NL batter, Michael Harris II of the Braves (6.5 points).
Ohtani ranks third overall.
Ohtani has earned Player of the Game honors nine times this season—three as a batter (3.0 points) and six as a starting pitcher (7.7 points). Because at least 25% of his honors came from each role (33.3% batting, 66.7% pitching), he qualifies to rank at both positions with his full 10.7-point total.
Separately, his 7.7 points as a pitcher would rank 10th among NL pitchers and his 3.0 points as a designated hitter would rank 26th among NL batters.
American League batters
Nick Kurtz of the Athletics leads for the third week with 6.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He leads over second-place Dillon Dingler of the Tigers (5.0 points).
Kurtz ranks 34th overall.
Box-Toppers almanac
Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors increased slightly this week. Batters won in 37 of the 91 games played (40.7%), while pitchers claimed 54 (59.3%).
Batters’ share of Box-Toppers points overall this season increased from 39.6% last week to 39.7% this week.
Batters have won fewer than 40% of all Box-Toppers points awarded in four of the past five seasons (surpassing it only in 2023 at 40.7%) and set a record-low share of 37.2% in 2024.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who contributes most to their team’s victory. Using standard box score statistics, we identify the Player of the Game for every MLB contest. In the regular season, winners earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point, with bonus points awarded to the top overall and league-specific players of the day. More on how Box-Toppers works.
