About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sánchez maintains his hold on the overall Box-Toppers player rankings for a third consecutive week, leading a slate of category leaders that remains entirely unchanged:
Gavin Williams of the Guardians leads American League pitchers.
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads National League batters.
Nick Kurtz of the Athleics leads AL batters.
Sánchez leads
Sánchez remains in first place overall with 13.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week. He leads over Jacob Misiorowski of the Brewers (11.0), who is second place overall and among NL pitchers.
American League pitchers
Gavin Williams of the Guardians leads for the third week with 9.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. While Cam Schlittler (Yankees) and Davis Martin (White Sox) match Williams with 9.7 points, Williams claims the tiebreaker based on higher 2025 point totals: Williams (11.7), Schlittler (7.4), and Martin (3.0).
Williams ranks fifth overall.
National League batters
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads for the fourth week with 10.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place NL batter, Michael Harris II of the Braves (6.5 points).
Ohtani ranks third overall.
Ohtani has earned Player of the Game honors nine times this season—three as a batter (3.0 points) and six as a starting pitcher (7.7 points). Because at least 25% of his honors came from each role (33.3% batting, 66.7% pitching), he qualifies to rank at both positions with his full 10.7-point total.
Separately, his 7.7 points as a pitcher would rank seventh among NL pitchers and his 3.0 points as a designated hitter would rank 21st among NL batters.
American League batters
Nick Kurtz of the Athletics leads for the second week with 5.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place Dillon Dingler of the Tigers (also with 5.0 points) on a tiebreaker with more 2025 points—4.5 vs. 3.5.
Kurtz ranks 43rd overall.
Box-Toppers almanac
Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors fell slightly this week, remaining below the 40% threshold. Batters won 34 of the 89 games played (38.2%), while pitchers claimed 55 (61.8%).
Batters’ share of Box-Toppers points overall this season dipped from 39.8% last week to 39.6% this week.
Batters have won fewer than 40% of all Box-Toppers points awarded in four of the past five seasons (surpassing it only in 2023 at 40.7%) and set a record-low share of 37.2% in 2024.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
