About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sánchez remains atop Box-Toppers player rankings for the second week.
Meanwhile, Nick Kurtz of the Athletics rises to first place among American League batters. The remaining player category leaders are unchanged:
Gavin Williams of the Guardians leads AL pitchers.
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads National League batters.
Overall leader: Cristopher Sánchez
Sánchez remains in first place overall with 11.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He leads over Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers (10.7 points), who is second place overall and among NL pitchers.
American League batters
Nick Kurtz of the Athletics rises from fourth to first place with 5.0 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Munetaka Murakami of the White Sox, who falls to second place with 4.5 points.
Kurtz ranks 35th overall.
American League pitchers
Gavin Williams of the Guardians leads for the second week with 9.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place Cam Schlittler of the Yankees (8.7 points).
Williams ranks fifth overall.
National League batters
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads for the third week with 10.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week. He leads over second-place NL batter, Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks (5.5 points).
Ohtani ranks second overall.
Ohtani has earned Player of the Game honors nine times this season—three as a batter (3.0 points) and six as a starting pitcher (7.7 points). Because at least 25% of his honors came from each role (33.3% batting, 66.7% pitching), he qualifies to rank at both positions with his full 10.7-point total.
Separately, his 7.7 points as a pitcher would rank sixth among NL pitchers and his 3.0 points as a designated hitter would rank 19th among NL batters.
Box-Toppers almanac
Batters this week increased their share of Player of the Game honors won this season, but their overall share of Box-Toppers points is still below 40 percent.
Batters won Player of the Game honors in 41 of the 93 games played this week (44.1%), while pitchers won in 52 games (55.9%).
Batters’ share of Box-Toppers points overall this season increased from 39.2% last week to 39.7% this week.
Batters have won fewer than 40% of all Box-Toppers points awarded in four of the past five seasons (surpassing it only in 2023 at 40.7%) and set a record-low share of 37.2% in 2024.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
