About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Angels pitcher José Soriano rises to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings this week, passing last week’s leader, Twins pitcher Taj Bradley.
Meanwhile, Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto rises to first place among National League pitchers, Brayan Rocchio of the Guardians rises to lead American League batters and Alec Burleson of the Cardinals maintains his lead among NL batters.
Soriano leads
Soriano has 6.0 Box-Toppers points in 2026, rising from third place last week to first this week, passing last week’s leader Bradley, who falls to second with 4.7 points. Soriano also leads Bradley among AL pitchers.
Soriano has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors four times this season. He’s earned 1.0 point as Player of the Game twice (March 26 and March 31) and 2.0 points as overall Player of the Day twice (April 6 and April 12).
National League pitchers
Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers rises from sixth place last week to first this week with 3.7 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Randy Vásquez of the Padres, who falls to third with 3.4 points. Yamamoto now leads second-place NL pitcher Braxton Ashcraft of the Pirates (3.7). Yamamoto wins the tiebreaker for the top spot thanks to his superior 2025 point total (17.7 vs. 4.7).
Yamamoto ranks fifth overall.
American League batters
Brayan Rocchio of the Guardians rises to first place with 2.5 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Brent Rooker of the Athletics, who falls to fifth place with 1.7 points. Rocchio now leads second-place AL batter Jeremiah Jackson of the Orioles (2.5). Though they both have 2.5 points, Rocchio ranks higher because he has more 2025 points—1.5 vs. 1.0.
Rocchio ranks 23rd overall.
National League batters
Alec Burleson of the Cardinals leads for the second week with 3.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He ranks ahead of second-place Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers (2.7). Notably, all of Ohtani’s 2026 points have come from pitching, though he remains ranked among batters based on 2025 performance. Ohtani also ranks 10th among NL pitchers.
Burleson falls from ninth place overall last week to 16th place this week.
Box-Toppers almanac
While pitchers continue to dominate the 2026 season, batters made a noticeable comeback this week. Batters took home 41.1% of Player of the Game honors over the past seven days, a significant jump from their season average.
This surge helped push the batters' season share of total points up to 36.9%. However, even with this progress, hitters are still trailing the record-low 37.2% share they posted in 2024.
Pitchers have dominated in winning Player of the Game in recent seasons. While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
