Luzardo earned 17.4 Box-Toppers points in 2025, eighth among all players and fifth among National League pitchers. He earned just 2.0 Box-Toppers points in an injury-shortened 2024 season with the Marlins, making his gain of 15.4 Box-Toppers points from 2024 to 2025 the largest among all players.

NOTABLE FACTS
⬛️ Five players have been both Box-Toppers most improved player and Box-Toppers Player of the Year, leading all players in season points—John Smoltz (1996), Johan Santana (2004), Blake Snell (2018), Max Scherzer (2021) and Justin Verlander (2022).
⬛️ Five most improved players did it in their rookie seasons—Kerry Wood (1998), Scott Williamson (1999), Jose Fernandez (2013), Chris Paddack (2019) and Shota Imanaga (2024).
⬛️ Lance Berkman is the only batter to be Box-Toppers most improved player (2006). Starting pitchers have done it the other 29 times.
⬛️ In 2025, Jesús Luzardo became the second player to be Box-Toppers’ most improved player for a second time. He did it in 2023 with the Marlins and in 2025 with the Phillies. Jose Fernandez is the only other player to be Box-Toppers most improved player twice (2013 and 2016). Fernandez died before the end of the 2016 season.
⬛️ Justin Verlander has the largest Box-Toppers point gain from one season to the next (+26.0), earning no points in 2021 and 26.0 in 2022.
⬛️ Four most improved players have finished the season as Marlins, the most of any team. That doesn’t count 2016, when Jose Fernandez, who played for the Marlins during the season, died before the end of the season. Six other franchises each have had two most improved players each—Astros, Dodgers, Expos/Nationals, Padres, Rays and Cubs.
Luzardo was also the Box-Toppers’ 2023 most-improved player, when his 13.8-point gain led all players. He earned 4.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022 and 17.8 points in 2023, both with the Marlins. In 2023, he ranked fifth overall and second among NL pitchers.
The late Jose Fernandez is the only other player to be Box-Toppers’ most-improved player in two seasons. In his 2013 rookie season, he earned 19.0 Box-Toppers points, fourth overall and fourth among NL pitchers. His 19.0-point gain led all players. He was the most improved player again in 2016 after coming back from Tommy John surgery, earning 22.4 Box-Toppers points, third overall, a gain of 17.7 points after earning 4.7 in 2015. Fernandez was killed in a boating accident before the end of the 2016 season.
Luzardo’s rise, fall and rise
In 2023, Luzardo made his 13.8-point gain after missing three months from May to August 2022 with a left forearm strain. A veteran of Tommy John elbow surgery in 2016 while in high school, Luzardo was able to avoid a second elbow surgery and pitch effectively in 2023. But in 2024, Luzardo was back on the injured list twice, first for two weeks with left elbow tightness and then in June with a lumbar stress reaction in his back, which kept him out for the remainder of the season.
In 2024, Luzardo ranked second among players whose Box-Toppers point total declined the most from 2023 to 2024. His 15.8-point drop from 17.8 to 2.0 was behind only the 20.1-point drop by Braves pitcher Spencer Strider (from 21.1 to 1.0).
For the 2025 season, Luzardo was traded from the Marlins to the Phillies and was able to rebound, protecting his arm and back by lowering his pitching arm angle. The more sidearm approach not only kept him healthy but helped him record 17.4 Box-Toppers points, nearly as many as the 17.8 he had in 2023.
deGrom wins AL Comeback Player awards
Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom was named AL Comeback Player of the Year by baseball writers of MLB.com, by members of the players’ union in the Players Choice Awards and by a panel of players, managers and executives in an award from The Sporting News.
deGrom made a gain of 10.0 Box-Toppers points from 2024 to 2025, fifth-most among all players. He earned 11.0 Box-Toppers points in 2025, 20th among AL pitchers, after earning just 1.0 point in 2024. DeGrom missed nearly the entire 2023 and 2024 seasons due to his second Tommy John surgery in June 2023, but was able to come back at age 36 in 2025 and pitch effectively.
deGrom’s best season was 2015 with the Mets, when he had 22.4 points, third overall and third among NL pitchers. He averaged 15.3 Box-Toppers points per season from 2014 to 2021, including six seasons with 10 or more points. He even performed well when healthy despite frequent injured-list stints. In 2021, he earned 16.7 Box-Toppers points, ninth overall and seventh among NL pitchers, despite missing most of the second half of the season. In 2022, he earned 9.4 Box-Toppers points, 28th among NL pitchers, making just 11 starts in the final two months of the season.
deGrom earned a combined 26.1 Box-Toppers points over 2021 and 2022, pitching roughly the equivalent of one full season, which would have ranked first overall in either 2021 or 2022. In 2023, he earned 7.7 Box-Toppers points by the end of April, on a pace to earn 45.0 Box-Toppers points during the season, which would have shattered the single-season record of 33.7 by Randy Johnson in 2000 and 2002. But that 7.7 points was all he earned that year as his June Tommy John surgery shut him down for the season.
deGrom was able to come back in late 2024, making three starts and earning 1.0 Box-Toppers point. His 6.7-point decline from 2023 to 2024 was 30th-biggest among all players, just outside of Box-Toppers’ list of 25 “Big dippers” for the season.
With his 11.0 Box-Toppers points in 2025, deGrom made a 10.0-point gain from 2024, same as two other players—Quinn Priester of the Brewers and Eric Lauer of the Blue Jays. deGrom ranks higher on the most-improved list on tiebreakers—he has more 2025 points than Lauer (11.0 vs. 10.0) and he has more 2023 points than Priester (7.7 vs. 0.0).
Acuña wins NL Comeback Player awards
Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Braves was named NL Comeback Player of the Year by baseball writers of MLB.com and by members of the players’ union in the Players Choice Awards.
But Acuña earned 4.5 Box-Toppers points in 2025, 46th among NL batters, after earning 0.0 in 2024. His 4.5-point increase from last season is 28th-best among all batters and 12th among NL batters.
Acuña played the first 49 games of the 2024 season before tearing the ACL in his left knee on May 26 and missing the rest of the season. He came back nearly a year later on May 23, 2025, playing in 95 games during the season and earning 4.5 Box-Toppers points.
This was Acuña’s second ACL tear. In July 2021, he tore the ACL in his right knee and did not return until late April 2022. He earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2021 and 3.5 in 2022. Acuña’s best season in terms of Box-Toppers points improvement was 2022 to 2023, when his 7.2-point gain from 3.5 in 2022 to 10.7 in 2023 was second among NL batters, behind the 7.5-point gain by Jason Heyward of the Dodgers. Acuńa’s 10.7 points in 2023 was second among NL batters, behind the 12.0 by Pete Alonso of the Mets.
In 2024, Acuña ranked 10th among all players whose Box-Toppers point total declined the most from 2023 to 2024 and first among all batters with a 10.7-point drop from 10.7 to 0.0.
Yelich wins one NL Comeback Player award
Christian Yelich of the Brewers was named NL Comeback Player of the Year by a panel of players, managers and executives in an award from The Sporting News.
Yelich ranks third among Box-Toppers’ most-improved batters for 2025, gaining 7.7 Box-Toppers points from 2024 to 2025, behind only Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs (+8.5) and Junior Caminero of the Rays (+8.0). Yelich also ranks 24th among all players in Box-Toppers points gain from 2024 to 2025.
Yelich earned 11.2 Box-Toppers points in 2025, second among all batters, behind Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies (12.0). He earned 3.5 Box-Toppers points in 2024, limited to just 73 games due to chronic lower back issues that eventually required season-ending surgery in August. Yelich played 150 games in 2025.

About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
BTP—Box-Toppers points
† Rookie status in 2025
Pete Crow-Armstrong of the Cubs had a gain of 8.5 Box-Toppers points from 1.0 point in 2024 to 9.5 in the 2025, the biggest among all batters and 17th-biggest among all players.
Crow-Armstrong earned his 1.0 point in his rookie season in which he played in 123 games. He saw a big jump in home runs (from 10 in 2024 to 31 in 2025) and RBIs (from 47 in 2024 to 95 in 2025) and correspondingly, earned far more Box-Toppers points in 2025 (9.5), playing in 157 total games.
Interestingly, he earned 6.5 of his points in the first half of the season and earned all 9.5 of his points by July 30, earning none in the final two months of the season. On July 3, his 6.5 points ranked fourth among AL batters. On July 31, his 9.5 points ranked third among NL batters. He also finished the season at 9.5 points, falling to fifth among NL batters.
Top rookies among most improved
Top-performing rookies often rank high among Box-Toppers’ most-improved players since they often have no Box-Toppers points the previous season. In fact, five of Box-Toppers’ most-improved players since 1996 have been rookies, including last season, when Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga led players with a 20.7-point gain, earning 20.7 in 2024, his first season in the Majors.
This year’s top rookie player, Athletics pitcher Jacob Lopez, earned 11.4 Box-Toppers points in 2025. While he pitched in eight games over 2023 and 2024 with the Rays, he earned no Box-Toppers points either season and his rookie status was intact for 2025. Lopez’s 11.4-point gain from 2024 to 2025 ranked second among all players and first among all AL players.
While Lopez was Box-Toppers’ top 2025 rookie, he received no votes from baseball writers for AL Rookie of Year, which went to teammate Nick Kurtz, whose 4.5 Box-Toppers points was tied for 12th among AL rookies.
This year’s top rookie batter is Drake Baldwin of the Braves, who earned 6.5 Box-Toppers points in his first season in the Majors. That 6.5-point gain is tied for the eighth-best among all batters and tied for the 41st-best among all players. (Baldwin won NL Rookie of the Year and was also Box-Toppers’ choice for the honor.)
Baldwin’s 6.5-point gain was tied with Jung Hoo Lee of the Giants, who also earned 6.5 points in 2025 after earning none in his 2024 rookie season, in which he played in 37 games.
From ‘Big Dipper’ to most improved
Three players among the top 25 most improved in 2025 were also among the top 25 players whose Box-Toppers point total declined most from 2023 to 2024.
This year’s most improved player, Jesús Luzardo, was on that list of players who had a big dip in points in 2024 (his 15.8-point drop was second-largest) and who rebounded with the biggest rise in points among all players in 2025 (15.4).
Two other players who went to opposite extremes in consecutive seasons:
Merrill Kelly
Merrill Kelly went from 13.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023 to 2.0 points in 2024, both with the Diamondbacks, an 11.0 point drop that was ninth among 2024’s biggest declines. In 2025, he had 12.7 Box-Toppers points with the Diamondbacks and Rangers, a 10.7-point rise that is fourth among 2025’s most improved players.
Kelly’s 13.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023 was seventh among NL pitchers. In 2024, he missed nearly four months after suffering a shoulder strain, earning only 2.0 points. But in 2025, he rebounded, had good health and became a trade deadline target, moving to the Rangers. He earned 12.7 Box-Toppers points (9.7 with the Diamondbacks and 3.0 with the Rangers), finishing the season 13th among AL pitchers.
While Kelly leads AL non-rookies in point improvement, he earned most of those points in the National League before his mid-season trade. Consequently, Jacob deGrom is the more logical choice for Box-Toppers’ AL Comeback Player of the Year, as he recorded the largest point gain for a non-rookie who played the entire season in the American League.
Brandon Woodruff
This is the third straight season Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff has been on Box-Toppers’ opposite extremes lists.
In 2022, he earned 20.8 Box-Toppers points, fourth overall and second among NL pitchers. But in 2023, he earned 7.0 points, a 13.8-point decline that ranked fifth among Box-Toppers’ 2023 big dippers. However, in 2024, he earned no points, a 7.0-point decline that put him among Box-Toppers’ top 25 big dippers for a second straight season, in 25th place. In 2025, he rebounded, earning 9.7 points, 20th among NL pitchers. His 9.7-point rise was 11th-best among all players.
Woodruff missed four months in 2023 with two separate right shoulder injuries. The first, a subscapularis strain, kept him out for four months after two starts in April. The second, more serious injury, a tear of his anterior capsule, came in September, required surgery and caused him to miss 15 months, including all of the 2024 season.
He did not return to pitch in 2025 until July 6, but rebounded with good health, earning his 9.7 points in 12 starts.
Top 10 players among most improved
In addition to Luzardo, four players among the overall top 10 in Box-Toppers points in 2025 were among Box-Toppers’ top 25 most-improved players in 2025:
Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto earned 17.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025, seventh overall and fourth among NL pitchers. His 11.3-point rise from the 6.4 points earned in his 2024 rookie season puts him in third place on the most improved list.
Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet earned 19.8 Box-Toppers points in 2025, fourth overall and second among AL pitchers. His 9.1-point rise from the 10.7 points earned in 2024 puts him in 15th place on the most improved list.
Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes earned 21.1 Box-Toppers points in 2025, second overall and first among NL pitchers. His 8.1-point rise from the 13.0 points earned in his 2024 rookie season puts him in 18th place on the most improved list.
Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta earned 17.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025, sixth overall and third among NL pitchers. His 8.0-point rise from the 9.7 points he earned in 2024 puts him in 19th place on the most improved list.
Rookies on Box-Toppers’ most improved players list
In addition to Jacob Lopez, the list of 25 Box-Toppers most improved players includes two other rookie players:
Cubs pitcher Cade Horton, whose 9.7-point gain from 0.0 in 2024 to 9.7 in 2025 ranked 12th among all improvers. Horton ranked 21st among NL pitchers in 2025, first among NL rookies.
Yankees pitcher Will Warren, whose 9.4-point gain from 0.0 in 2024 to 9.4 in 2025 ranked 14th among all improvers. Warren ranked 27th among AL pitchers in 2025, second among AL rookies (behind Lopez).
Most improved batters
There are three batters among the top 25 most improved players, including the previously mentioned Pete Crow-Armstrong and Christian Yelich.
The other batter is Junior Caminero of the Rays, whose 8.0-point gain from 1.0 in 2024 to 9.0 in 2025 ranked 22nd on the most-improved list, second among most-improved batters. Caminero’s 9.0 points in 2025 was fifth among AL batters.
Batters rebounded to join Box-Toppers’ 25 most-improved players list in 2025 after there were none in 2024. Last year, for the first time in Box-Toppers tracking history (which began in 1995), the top 25 list consisted entirely of pitchers, with no batters.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day. (No Box-Toppers points are awarded in postseason games.)
