2015 leaders
Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta is Box-Toppers Player of the Year.
Arrieta earned 29.1 Box-Toppers points in 2015, winning the crown by 3.4 points over second-place player, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (25.7). Arrieta ends Kershaw’s four-year streak of leading NL pitchers and two-year streak of leading all players.
Other category leaders:
Box-Toppers American League Player of the Year—Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel had 21.4 points, finishing 0.3 points ahead of second-place player, Blue Jays pitcher David Price (21.1). Keuchel ranks fourth among all players.
Box-Toppers American League Batter of the Year—Adrian Beltre of the Rangers had 12.5 Box-Toppers points, finishing 0.5 points ahead of second-place player Mike Trout of the Angels (12.0). In fact, Beltre only made his debut among Box-Toppers top 10 AL batters in the season’s final week, in sixth place, before rising to the top spot after a strong week, earning 3.0 Box-Toppers points. Beltre ranks 27th among all players.
Box-Toppers National League Batter of the Year—Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies had 11.5 Box-Toppers points finishing 0.6 points ahead of second-place player Yoenis Cespedes of the Mets (10.9). Gonzalez ranks 31st among all players.
Both Beltre and Gonzalez set dubious Box-Toppers records in 2015—they each had the lowest Box-Toppers point total to lead their league in batting in 21 seasons of record keeping. In the AL, Beltre tied the previous low point total to lead AL batters, set in 2008 by Aubrey Huff of the Orioles (12.5). Gonzalez (11.5) set a new mark for NL batters, lower than the previous lowest Box-Toppers point for a leader set in 2014 by Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies (11.6).
Box-Toppers’ top pitchers in their leagues—Arrieta and Keuchel—each won their league’s Cy Young Award. However, neither of Box-Toppers’ top batters in their leagues won Most Valuable Player Awards. Josh Donaldson of the Blue Jays won the AL MVP (he had 9.9 Box-Toppers points, ranked seventh among AL batters) and Bryce Harper of the Nationals won the NL MVP (he had 9.0 Box-Toppers points, ranked seventh among NL batters).
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each regular season Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
