Meanwhile, Tylor Megill of the Mets rises to lead National League pitchers and C.J. Cron of the Rockies rises to lead NL batters.

Ohtani has 7.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, earning Player of the Game honors four times so far this season, twice as a designated hitter and twice as a starting pitcher. He has 3.0 points as a batter and 4.0 points as a pitcher, neither enough to lead the AL categories separately, but enough to lead both when combined.

Ohtani earned 16.1 Box-Toppers points in 2021 but was ranked only as a pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.

Ohtani leads AL batters over Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (4.2 points) and leads AL pitchers over Corey Kluber of the Rays (5.0). Ohtani earned 2.0 points in the past week.

Ohtani lost the lead briefly this week, when he was passed by Tylor Megill on April 29 (5.7 points) before retaking the lead May 5.

National League pitchers—Tylor Megill of the Mets rises to lead with 5.7 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader Kyle Wright of the Braves (5.0), who falls to third. Megill leads over second-place Joe Musgrove of the Padres (5.0). Megill ranks second overall.

National League batters—C.J. Cron of the Rockies rises to the lead with 4.0 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader Nolan Arenado of the Cardinals (3.0), who falls to fourth. Cron leads over second-place Michael Chavis of the Pirates. Though both have 4.0 points, Cron ranks higher because he had more 2021 Box-Toppers points—6.5 vs. 0.0. Cron ranks 15th overall.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
