About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta leads Box-Toppers weekly season player rankings report for the third straight week.
Meanwhile, Astros pitcher Hunter Brown is this week’s new leader among American League pitchers. Batting leaders in both leagues are the same as last week—Pete Alonso of the Mets leads National League batters while Alex Bregman of the Red Sox leads AL batters.
Pivetta leads
Pivetta has 6.0 Box-Toppers points in 2025, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place player, Pete Alonso of the Mets (5.5 points) and leads NL pitchers ahead of second-place Andrew Heaney of the Pirates (5.0 points).
American League pitchers
Astros pitcher Hunter Brown passes last week’s leader, Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet for the overall lead. Crochet falls to second place.
While both Brown and Crochet have 5.4 Box-Toppers points in 2025, Brown ranks ahead because he has more 2024 points—12.0 vs. 10.7. Brown ranks third overall.
National League batters
Pete Alonso of the Mets leads for the third straight week with 5.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week, rising from seventh to second place overall. He leads ahead of second-place NL batter Carson Kelly of the Cubs (4.5 points).
Alonso is the only batter among the top 10 players in 2025 Box-Toppers points.
American League batters
Alex Bregman of the Red Sox continues to lead with 3.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He ranks ahead of second-place Aaron Judge of the Yankees (3.5 points). Bregman ranks 22nd overall.
Box-Toppers almanac
Batters did better this week, winning Player of the Game honors in 41 of the 94 games played (43.6 percent) while pitchers still won the majority—53 games (56.4 percent).
That increased batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season from 36.8 percent last week to 38.2 percent this week (179 wins in 469 total games), with pitchers slipping to 61.8 percent (290 wins).
Batters increased their share of Box-Toppers points from 36.9 percent last week to 38.3 percent this week (214.9 points out of 561.2 total awarded). Pitchers have won 61.7 percent of all points.
With a better-than-usual week, batters moved ahead of the pace of the all-time record low share points earned in a season. Last year, batters had the lowest share of points compared to pitchers (37.2 percent) in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
