Ohtani also rises to lead American League pitchers and maintains his lead among AL batters. In addition, both National League leaders remained unchanged from last week—Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks leads NL pitchers and Max Muncy of the Dodgers leads NL batters.

Ohtani

Ohtani has 12.9 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman, who falls to second place overall with 12.0 points. Ohtani also passes Gausman for the lead among AL pitchers.

Ohtani extends his lead among AL batters, leading for the fifth straight week, picking up 3.5 points in the past week. He is ahead of second-place AL batter Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5 points).

Ohtani has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors 11 times in 2023—six as a designated hitter and five as a starting pitcher. He’s now earned 7.2 of his Box-Toppers points as a batter and 5.7 as a starting pitcher. He is the only player to qualify to rank among both pitchers and batters in Box-Toppers rankings because he’s earned more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors in both categories.

In both 2021 and 2022, Ohtani spent periods of both seasons ranked among batters but finished both years ranked only as a starting pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.

Ohtani earned Player of the Game honors three times in the past week, all three as a designated hitter.

National League pitchers

Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen leads the category for the ninth straight week with 8.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers (8.1 points). Gallen ranks fourth overall this week.

National League batters

Max Muncy of the Dodgers leads for the third week with 5.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place player, Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals. Though Muncy and Gorman both have 5.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023, Muncy ranks higher because he has more 2022 Box-Toppers points—7.2 vs. 5.0.

Muncy ranks 43rd among all players.

Box-Toppers almanac

  • Players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023—539 (there were 511 as of last week).

  • Players with more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points—178 (there were 153 as of last week).

  • Players who’ve made their Box-Toppers debut so far in 2023 (earning their first career Player of the Game honor)—89 (there were 81 as of last week).

  • Games completed so far in 2023—1,032, an average of 68.8 per team.

  • Percentage of scheduled season completed—42.5.

  • Pitchers had another dominant week, winning Player of the Game honors in 56 of the 93 games this week (60.2 percent), while batters won in 37 (39.8 percent). That increased pitchers’ share of Player of the Game honors this season to 59.0 percent (609 of 1,032 games) from 58.9 percent last week. Batters’ share declined to 41.0 percent. While batters are still doing better than last year, the improvement is eroding and any advantages rules changes this season seemed to provide batters are increasingly becoming questionable. Through the first 11 weeks of the season last year, batters won 38.6 percent of all Player of the Game honors (405 out of 1,048 games). Through the entire 2022 season, batters won a record-low 38 percent share of Player of the Game honors.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
