Verlander had 26.0 Box-Toppers points during the regular season. Verlander came back after sitting out most of the previous two seasons, recovering from Tommy John surgery. He earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in 2020 and none in 2021. His 26.0 point gain from 0.0 in 2021 to 26.0 in 2022 is the largest single-season point gain for any player since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
Verlander’s 26.0 points is also ranked 21st among most Box-Toppers points earned in a single season (since 1995). Verlander also has the 12th-most points earned in a single season—27.5 in 2019, when he finished second overall behind then-teammate Gerrit Cole (32.2). It is the fifth season Verlander has earned more than 24.0 Box-Toppers points in a single season. He also did it:
2011 with the Tigers, when he had 24.4 Box-Toppers points, third overall, first among American League pitchers.
2012 with the Tigers, 24.8 points, first overall.
2018 with the Astros, 24.1 points, third overall, second among AL pitchers.
2019 with the Astros, 27.5 points, second overall, second among AL pitchers.
Verlander ranks fifth among all players (third among active players) in career Box-Toppers points since 1995 with 232.6. He trails Mets pitcher Max Scherzer (236.3) by 3.7 points. Verlander has signed with the Mets for 2023.
Verlander earned his 26.0 Box-Toppers points by being Box-Toppers Player of the Game in 18 of the Astros’ wins, earning 1.0 Box-Toppers point each time. Eight of those 18 times, Verlander earned 1.0 bonus point for being Box-Toppers overall Player of the Day.
While Verlander also earned 18 wins in 2022, they do not directly correspond to his 18 Player of the Game honors. Verlander twice earned Player of the Game honors when he picked up a no-decision (on June 1 and Aug. 28) and twice earned the win without earning Player of the Game honors (May 4 and July 7).
At July’s All-Star break, Verlander ranked second overall with 15.0 Box-Toppers points, behind Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (17.0). Verlander took the season lead in Box-Toppers points for the first time on Aug. 4, with 19.0 points. He held the lead until Ohtani passed him Sept. 29 with 24.7 points. But Verlander reclaimed the lead on Oct. 4, the next-to-last day of the season, with 26.0 points.
Ohtani, whose 24.7 Box-Toppers points was second overall and second among AL pitchers, led players during four different intervals in 2022 for 85 total days, the most of any player. Verlander led for two intervals for a total of 58 days. His 56-day tenure atop player rankings from Aug. 4 to Sept. 28 was the longest uninterrupted stretch atop the rankings in 2022.
Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins, who led National League pitchers with 21.1 Box-Toppers points, ranks third among all players. Pete Alonso of the Mets, who led NL batters with 14.9 points, ranks 20th overall. Aaron Judge of the Yankees, who led AL batters with 13.2 points, ranks 28th overall.

Three of the four Box-Toppers points category leaders went on to win major postseason awards: Verlander won the AL Cy Young Award, Alcantara won the NL Cy Young Award and Judge won the AL Most Valuable Player Award. Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals won the NL MVP Award over Alonso. Goldschmidt earned 7.5 Box-Toppers points, seventh among NL batters and 88th among all players.
It took 7.0 Box-Toppers points for a player to make the top 100 list—Mets closing pitcher Edwin Diaz took the 100th spot with 7.0 points. He earned them by being Player of the Game in seven Mets wins, earning 1.0 Box-Toppers point for each.
Box-Toppers points are a measure of how much a player provides key contributions to his teams win. Specifically, Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers tends to favor pitchers, especially in the short term, so most of the top 100 players are pitchers (78). That’s more than were in the top 100 in the previous three seasons—2021 (74), 2020 (62) and 2019 (71), but fewer than in 2018 (82).

5—Outfield (1 RF, 1 LF, 3 CF)
2—Closing pitcher

1—Designated hitter
1—Catcher
0—Middle relief pitcher
