Dodgers lead over Astros narrows in final Box-Toppers team rankings report for 2022

The Los Angeles Dodgers finish the 2022 season leading Box-Toppers team rankings, but the gap between them and the second-place Houston Astros has narrowed.

Here are Box-Toppers final 2022 team rankings through games of Wednesday, Oct. 5. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from Sept. 30 to Oct. 5 . The column Wk ago shows the team's rank on Sept. 29.

The Dodgers lead for the ninth straight week, but their cushion over the second-place team, which once was as much as 8.9 Box-Toppers points, has narrowed in the final standings to just 1.7 points.

The Astros, the leader among American League teams for the fourth straight week, edged to their closest margin from the first-place Dodgers.

Dodgers players have accumulated 133.1 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.7 since the last team rankings report last week. They lead National League teams for the 13th straight week, ahead of the Atlanta Braves (third overall with 129.0 points, picking up 4.0 in the past week). The Dodgers also have baseball’s best winning percentage (.685).

The Dodgers are led by pitcher Julio Urias (19.4 Box-Toppers points, seventh among all players and fourth among NL pitchers). The Dodgers top batter is Mookie Betts (11.7 Box-Toppers points, second among NL batters). There are 26 different Dodgers players who earned Player of the Game honors in 2022.

The Astros rank second overall and lead among AL teams for the fourth straight week with 131.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up 6.0 in the past week. They lead AL teams ahead of the New York Yankees (fourth overall with 125.9 Box-Toppers points, picking up 4.7 in the past week). The Astros have the second-best winning percentage among all teams (.654) and best among AL teams.

The Astros are led by pitcher Justin Verlander (26.0 Box-Toppers points, first among all players). The Astros top batter is Yordan Alvarez (8.7 Box-Toppers points, third among AL batters). There are 24 different Astros players who earned Player of the Game honors in 2022.

Two teams each gained 6.0 Box-Toppers points—most among all teams—since the last team rankings report last Friday, the Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays maintain their ninth-place ranking with 113.4 Box-Toppers points.

The Milwaukee Brewers are Box-Toppers’ highest-ranked team to not make the playoffs. The Brewers rank 10th overall with 107.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 4.0 points in the past week. They finished one game behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the third NL wild card spot. But they finished ahead of the Phillies in Box-Toppers rankings. The Phillies rank 13th with 105.3 points, picking up 5.7 in the past week.

The Tampa Bay Rays are Box-Toppers’ lowest-ranked team to make the postseason, qualifying as the third AL wild card team. The Rays finish 15th overall with 100.2 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.5 in the past week. They finish behind two AL teams that did not qualify for the postseason:

  • Minnesota Twins, 11th overall with 105.6 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 in the past week.

  • Baltimore Orioles, 14th overall with 100.3 Box-Toppers points, picking up 3.7 in the past week.

The Texas Rangers had the biggest decline among all teams, falling two spots from 21st to 23rd place with 77.7 points, picking up 2.0 in the past week.

The Cincinnati Reds finish in 30th and last place, the spot they’ve been in now for 11 straight weeks, with 54.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
