Player of the Day—Fried struck out eight over seven innings, allowing one run, four hits and one walk, in the 3-2 win over the Brewers.

Fried earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 6.0 for the season, second overall, behind only Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (7.0). Fried rises to first place among NL pitchers, passing previous leader Eric Lauer of the Brewers (5.7), who only took the top NL pitching spot Friday.

American League Player of the Day—Twins pitcher Sonny Gray struck out seven over four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks, in the 1-0 win over the Athletics.

Gray did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because he did not pitch the required five innings to earn the win. Also, the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.

Gray earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and now ranks 34th among AL pitchers.

Gray has now earned Box-Toppers points in 10 straight seasons. He earned his first points in 2013 with the Athletics and now has 77.1 career Box-Toppers points, eighth among active AL pitchers. His best season was 2015 with the Athletics when he had 17.8 points, sixth among AL pitchers. He earned 6.4 points in 2021 with the Reds, 46th among NL pitchers.

Twins pitcher Sonny Gray is Saturday’s Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day.

National League Batter of the Day—Wilmer Flores of the Giants hit a grand slam and went 1-for-3, scoring once and driving in six runs, in the 13-7 win over the Cardinals.

Wilmer Flores of the Giants is Saturday’s Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—Brandon Lowe of the Rays hit two home runs and went 2-for-3, scoring three times and driving in two runs, in the 8-2 win over the Mariners.

Brandon Lowe of the Rays is Saturday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

Rankings—Two other players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday:

White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Saturday’s win over the Red Sox.

White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease (5IP 4H R 3BB 8K ND in the 3-1, 10-inning win over the Red Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 5.0 for the season, rising to sixth place overall, second among AL pitchers, behind Ohtani (7.0).

Marlins pitcher Pablo Lopez is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Saturday’s win over the Padres.

Marlins pitcher Pablo Lopez (8IP 5H 0R 2BB 5K W in the 8-0 win over the Padres) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 4.7 for the season, rising to 10th place overall, seventh among NL pitchers.

The rise of Fried, Cease and Lopez pushes out the only full-time batters from the Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list. Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (4.2 points) falls from ninth to 12th place and Yordan Alvarez of the Astros (4.2 points) falls from 10th to 13th place. Ohtani is the only batter remaining on the top 10 list (in first place overall), but Ohtani has only earned 3.0 of his 7.0 points as a designated hitter, which would not be enough by themselves to reach the top 10. His 4.0 points as a starting pitcher also would not be enough to reach the top 10. But combined, his 7.0 points leads all players.

The last batter to finish the season among Box-Toppers season player rankings overall top 10 list is Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers, whose 16.9 points in 2013 ranked eighth overall. Prior to 2010, batters regularly finished among the overall top 10.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Saturday’s win over the Cubs.

Notable—Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw now has 251.6 career Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Kershaw (7IP 5H 0R BB 2K W in the 7-0 win over the Cubs) ranks second in career points since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began, trailing only Randy Johnson (282.5) by 30.9 points. (Johnson would have an estimated 380 points if his entire career from 1988 were tracked.) Kershaw leads active players in career points ahead of Mets pitcher Max Scherzer (228.3) by 23.3 points.

Kershaw now has 3.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 13th among NL pitchers.

Scoring—Fried earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Gray earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Flores and Lowe each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
