Ohtani also leads both American League pitching and batting categories.

Meanwhile, Mookie Betts of the Dodgers rises to lead National League batters in Box-Toppers points and Joe Musgrove of the Padres maintains his lead among NL pitchers.

Ohtani has 8.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, earning Player of the Game honors five times so far this season, three times as a designated hitter and twice as a starting pitcher. He has 4.0 points as a batter and 4.0 points as a pitcher, neither enough to lead the AL categories separately, but enough to lead both when combined.

Ohtani earned 16.1 Box-Toppers points in 2021 but was ranked only as a pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.

Ohtani leads AL batters over Ty France of the Mariners (5.0 points) and leads AL pitchers over Nestor Cortes of the Yankees (7.4). Ohtani earned no points in the past week.

National League batters—Mookie Betts rises to the lead with 6.5 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Pete Alonso of the Mets, who falls to second with 6.0 points. Betts ranks eighth among all players.

National League pitchers—Joe Musgrove of the Padres leads the category for the third straight week with 7.0 Box-Toppers points, earning 1.0 point in the past week. He leads over second-place NL pitcher Eric Lauer of the Brewers (6.7). Musgrove ranks third overall.

  • Players with more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points—108 (there were 91 as of last week).

  • Players who’ve made their Box-Toppers debut so far in 2022 (earning their first career Player of the Game honor)—62 (there were 48 as of last week).

  • Games completed so far in 2021—665, an average of 44.3 per team.

  • Percentage of scheduled season completed—27.4.

  • In the 95 games completed in the past week, pitchers won Player of the Game honors 55 times (57.9 percent) compared to 40 times for batters (42.1 percent). Batters improved their overall percentage of Player of the Game honors earned for the season from 35.3 last week to 36.2 this week (241 out of 665 games). That’s still below last year’s near-record low share for batters and the all-time record-low for share of Player of the Game honors won by batters is 39.14 percent in 2014. Last year, batters won just 39.15 percent of all Player of the Game honors, the second-lowest in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
