New York Yankees rise to lead Box-Toppers weekly team rankings, Brewers fall to 2nd

The New York Yankees, the week’s hottest team, rise to lead Box-Toppers weekly team rankings report.

Here are Box-Toppers 2022 team rankings through games of Thursday, May. 12. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from May 6 to May 12. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank on May 5.

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Brewers, last week’s overall leader, fall to second place, but still lead National League teams.

Yankees players have accumulated 29.3 Box-Toppers points, most of any team, rising from third place overall last week and picking up 7.5 points in the past week, most of any team. The Brewers pass last week’s top American League team, the Los Angeles Angels, which fall from second to third overall with 28.7 Box-Toppers points, second among AL teams.

The Yankees also have baseball’s best winning percentage (.742).

The Yankees are led by pitcher Nestor Cortes (4.7 Box-Toppers points, fourth among AL pitchers). The Yankees top batter is Aaron Judge (3.5 Box-Toppers points, fifth among AL batters). There are 14 different Yankees players who have earned Player of the Game honors so far in 2022.

The Brewers fall from first to second overall with 29.1 Box-Toppers points, picking up 3.4 points in the past week, and still hold the lead among NL teams, ahead of the second-place New York Mets (fourth overall with 25.9 points). The Brewers are tied with the NL’s third-best winning percentage (.625) with the San Diego Padres and behind the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers (both with .667). The Mets rank fourth overall in Box-Toppers team rankings (25.9 points), the Dodgers are seventh (24.5) and the Padres are eighth (24.0).

The Brewers are led by pitcher Eric Lauer (5.7 Box-Toppers points, fourth overall and third among NL pitchers). The Brewers top batter is Willy Adames (3.4 Box-Toppers points, fourth among NL batters). There are 12 different Brewers players who have earned Player of the Game honors so far in 2022.

Two teams each made four-spot jumps in Box-Toppers team rankings, tied for the biggest rise in the past week:

  • The Baltimore Orioles rose from 26th to 22nd place with 14.5 points, picking up 4.0 in the past week.

  • The Oakland Athletics rose from 27th to 23rd place with 13.0 points, picking up 4.0 in the past week.

Two teams each had four-spot drops in Box-Toppers team rankings, tied for the biggest decline in the past week:

  • The Washington Nationals fell from 22nd to 26th place with 13.2 points, picking up 2.0 in the past week.

  • The Boston Red Sox fell from 23rd to 27th place with 12.2 points, picking up 1.0 in the past week.

The Cincinnati Reds are in 30th and last place for the fourth straight week with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up 5.5 points in the past week, which was tied for the most points earned by an NL team in the past week. (The San Francisco Giants also picked up 5.5 points.)

Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
