Meanwhile, Joe Musgrove of the Padres rises to lead National League pitchers and C.J. Cron of the Rockies maintains his lead among NL batters.

Ohtani has 8.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, earning Player of the Game honors five times so far this season, three times as a designated hitter and twice as a starting pitcher. He has 4.0 points as a batter and 4.0 points as a pitcher, neither enough to lead the AL categories separately, but enough to lead both when combined.

Ohtani earned 16.1 Box-Toppers points in 2021 but was ranked only as a pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.

Ohtani leads AL batters over Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (4.2 points) and leads AL pitchers over Dylan Cease of the White Sox (5.0). Ohtani earned 1.0 point in the past week.

National League pitchers—Joe Musgrove of the Padres rises to lead with 6.0 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader Tylor Megill of the Mets (5.7 Box-Toppers points), who falls to fourth place. Though Musgrove and second-place NL pitcher Max Fried of the Braves both have 6.0 Box-Toppers points, Musgrove ranks ahead because he had more 2021 points—16.1 vs. 11.8. Musgrove ranks second overall.

National League batters—C.J. Cron of the Rockies leads with 4.0 Box-Toppers points, earning no points in the past week. Cron leads over second-place Michael Chavis of the Pirates. Though both have 4.0 points, Cron ranks higher because he had more 2021 Box-Toppers points—6.5 vs. 0.0. Cron ranks 15th overall.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
