Cole earned 29.8 Box-Toppers points combined in 2020 and 2021 to lead all players in that span, while Scherzer earned 120.3 from 2016-2021, most in that span.

Both also led each respective time span at the end of the 2020 season: Cole had 39.6 points over the two seasons from 2019-2020 and Scherzer had 116.2 points over the six seasons from 2015-2020.

Cole ranks second among players over the past six seasons (with 93.5 points from 2016-2021), which is the highest among all American League players in that span. Scherzer meanwhile ranks second among players over the past two seasons (with 29.1 points over 2020-2021), which is highest among National League players in that span..

(See the chart below for Top 100 players of 2020-21 and 2016-21.)

This is the fourth straight season Scherzer has led players over the six-year rolling total:

  • At the end of 2020, he led all players from 2015-2020 with 116.2 points.

  • At the end of 2019, he led all players from 2014-19 with 134.3 points.

  • At the end of 2018, he led all players from 2013-18 with 137.0 points.

Scherzer ranked among the overall top 10 players in seven of the past nine seasons, 2013-2021, missing 2019, when he ranked 15th with 15.4 points, and 2020, when he ranked 45th with 4.0 points. The six-year span from 2016 to 2021 that Scherzer leads are bookended by the two seasons in which Scherzer led all players in points. Here’s a look at Scherzer’s Box-Toppers point total and rank each of the past six seasons:

  • 2016—25.7 with Nationals, first overall.

  • 2017—25.0 with Nationals, second overall, first among NL pitchers.

  • 2018—25.1 with Nationals, second overall, first among NL pitchers.

  • 2019—15.4 with Nationals, 15th overall, ninth among NL pitchers.

  • 2020—4.0 with Nationals, 45th overall, 18th among NL pitchers.

  • 2021—25.1 with the Nationals and Dodgers, first overall. (He earned 10.7 points with the Nationals, before being traded July 31 to the Dodgers, where he earned 14.4 points in the final two months of the season).

Cole, the leader in points over 2020 and 2021, ranked 12th overall in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season with 7.4 points, 12th overall and fifth among AL pitchers. He had 22.4 points in 2021, second overall and first among AL pitchers.

Kershaw, deGrom

There are two other players who rank among the top 10 over both 2020-21 and 2016-21: Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw and Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom.

Kershaw ranks third over the past six seasons with 89.3 Box-Toppers points over 2016-21, second among NL pitchers. He ranks 10th over the past two seasons with 21.1 points over 2020-21, eighth among NL pitchers.

deGrom ranks fourth over the past six seasons with 86.7 Box-Toppers points over 2016-21, third among NL pitchers. He ranks fourth over the past two seasons with 25.4 points over 2020-21, third among NL pitchers.

Here are Kershaw’s season-by-season point totals over the past six years:

  • 2016—24.4, second overall, second among NL pitchers.

  • 2017—23.1, third overall, second among NL pitchers.

  • 2019–12.7, 25th overall.

  • 2020—7.7, ninth overall, fifth among NL pitchers.

Here are deGrom’s season-by-season point totals over the past six years:

  • 2019—19.1, fourth overall, second among NL pitchers.

  • 2020—8.7, sixth overall, fourth among NL pitchers.

  • 2021—16.7, ninth overall, seventh among NL pitchers.

Justin Verlander

Despite earning no Box-Toppers points in 2021, Astros pitcher Justin Verlander still ranks fifth among all players in Box-Toppers points over the past six seasons.

Verlander earned 82.0 Box-Toppers points over 2016-2021, second-most among AL pitchers behind Cole’s 122.9. Verlander did not pitch in 2021 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020.

But Verlander ranked fifth in points over the past six years by having large point totals in four of the previous five years:

  • 2016—14.7 (with Tigers), 12th overall, fourth among AL pitchers.

  • 2017—14.7 (with Tigers and Astros), 16th overall, sixth among AL pitchers.

  • 2018—24.1 (with Astros), third overall, second among AL pitchers.

  • 2019—27.5 (with Astros), second overall, second among AL pitchers.

  • 2020—1.0 (with Astros), 290th overall.

  • 2021—0.0 (with Astros), 863rd overall.

Mets pitcher Carlos Carrasco is the next-highest ranking player over the past six seasons who did not earn Box-Toppers points in 2021. Carrasco ranks 12th in Box-Toppers points from 2016-2021 with 66.0. Carrasco missed much of the 2021 season with injuries, starting 12 games beginning on July 30. However, he did not earn Player of the Game honors in any of those starts.

Top batters

Jose Ramirez of the Indians is the top-ranked batter over the past two seasons with 16.5 Box-Toppers points over 2020-2021, 26th-most among all players in that span. Ramirez led all batters in 2021 with 13.0 Box-Toppers points. He ranks 66th among all players over the past six seasons with 35.5 Box-Toppers points over 2016-2021, 10th among all batters.

Nolan Arenado of the Cardinals is the top-ranked batter over the past six seasons with 43.9 Box-Toppers points over 2016-2021, 36th among all players in that span. Arenado led NL batters in 2016 with the Rockies when he had 10.7 Box-Toppers points. He’s been among the top 10 NL batters in three other seasons over the six-year span, including 2021 with the Cardinals, when he ranked fourth with 9.0 points. Arenado ranks 81st among all players over the past two seasons with 10.0 points, 16th among all batters.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

What are those numbers after players' names?
About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
