BTP: Box-Toppers points
* Jose Fernandez, who died Sept. 25, played for the Miami Marlins
What are those numbers after players' names?

Kershaw has the most Box-Toppers points of any player over both 2015 and 2016 with 50.1, leading the second-place player by 3.4 points (Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer has 46.7).

Kershaw also has the most Box-Toppers points of any player over the past six seasons, from 2011 to 2016, with 150.2, leading the second-place player by 38.9 points (Scherzer has 111.3).

(See the chart below for Top 100 players of 2015-16 & 2011-16.)

Kershaw has been Box-Toppers most dominant player in recent years, finishing either first or second among all players for the past six seasons. He led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2011, 2013 and 2014 and ranked second among all players in 2012, 2015 and 2016. In addition, he led all National League pitchers in points four straight years (from 2011 to 2014).

Here are Kershaw’s Box-Toppers points for the past six seasons:

  • 2011: 26.1, first among all players, tied for the 16th-highest single-season total since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
  • 2012: 20.8, second among all players, first among NL pitchers.
  • 2013: 21.7, first among all players.
  • 2014: 31.5, first among all players, tied for the fourth-highest single-season total since Box-Toppers tracking began.
  • 2015: 25.7, second among all players, second among NL pitchers, tied for the 20th-highest single-season total since Box-Toppers tracking began.
  • 2016: 24.4, second among all players, second among NL pitchers.

Box-Toppers’ 2016 overall leader, Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer, finishes second among all players over both the past two seasons and past six seasons. He has 46.7 points over 2015-16 and 111.3 points over 2011-16.

The only other player with 100.0 or more Box-Toppers points over the past six seasons is Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, whose 100.0 points even ranks third among all players over 2011-16. Bumgarner ranks 12th among pitchers over the past two seasons with 30.0. He had 13.0 points in 2016.

The highest-ranking American League player over the past two seasons is Indians pitcher Corey Kluber, who ranks fourth, with 34.6 points. Kluber led AL players in Box-Toppers points in 2016 with 21.2, fifth among all players.

The highest-ranking AL player over the past six seasons is Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez, who ranks fifth, with 91.4 points over 2011-16. Hernandez had 6.0 Box-Toppers points in 2016, 155th among all players.

Mike Trout of the Angels is top-ranked batter over the past two seasons with 24.5 Box-Toppers points, ranked 24th among all players over 2015-16. Trout ranks 36th among players over the past six seasons with 49.0 points.

Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers is the top-ranked batter over the past six seasons with 65.3 Box-Toppers points, ranked 18th among all players. Cabrera has 16.7 points over the past two seasons, ranked 58th.

Nolan Arenado of the Rockies is top-ranked NL batter over the past two seasons with 19.2 Box-Toppers points, 41st among all players from 2015-16. Arenado led NL batters in 2016 with 10.7 points.

Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates is top-ranked NL batter over the past six seasons with 48.2 Box-Toppers points, ranked 38th among all players from 2011-16.

Over the past two seasons, a large majority of players in Box-Toppers top 100 are pitchers—70. In Box-Toppers’ top 100 players list for 2016, 67 are pitchers. Here is a breakdown of players on the top 100 list for 2015-16 by their primary position:

  • 65—Starting pitcher
  • 10—Outfield (5 CF, 3 LF, 2 RF)
  • 7—Third base
  • 5—First base
  • 5—Closing pitcher
  • 3—Second base
  • 3—Designated hitter
  • 1—Catcher
  • 1—Shortstop

The Royals, Cubs and Mets have the most players among the top 100 for 2015-16 with seven players each. The Blue Jays have six players on the list. The White Sox, Orioles, Mariners and Cardinals each have five players. Five teams each have one player on the list—the Twins, Athletics, Reds, Brewers and Marlins. The Marlins lone player is the late Jose Fernandez. The Padres are the only team with no players on the list.

Over the past six seasons, 75 pitchers are on the top 100 list. Here is a breakdown of players on the top 100 list for 2011-16 by their primary position:

  • 72—Starting pitcher
  • 9—Outfield (4 CF, 2 LF, 3 RF)
  • 8—First base
  • 3—Designated hitter
  • 3—Closing pitcher
  • 2—Third base
  • 1—Second base
  • 1—Catcher
  • 1—Shortstop

The Blue Jays have the most players among the top 100 for 2011-16 with eight. However, the largest group on the list is players who are currently out of Major League Baseball; there are nine players on the list who are either free agents (four), retired (three), playing in Japan (one) or who have died (one).

The Orioles and Giants each have six players on the list. The Cubs and Tigers each have five. Two teams—the Athletics and Padres—have no players on the list.

There are 41 players who make all three top 100 lists—for the 2016 season (see post about that list here), for 2015-16 and for 2011-16 (see the chart “Players on 3 top 100 lists”).

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.

* Jose Fernandez died Sept. 25, 2016, in a boating accident. He played for the Miami Marlins.
† Prince Fielder announced Aug. 10 he would not be able to continue playing baseball because of injuries. He did not formally retire.
What are those numbers after players' names?
Note: Players are listed with the team with whom they finished the 2016 season. Several players on the list, such as Tim Lincecum, Cliff Lee, Kyle Lohse and Bud Norris were unsigned free agents at season's end. Hiroki Kuroda was playing in Japan.
Team names: In the chart, the teams "ana al" and "fla nl" refer to the Angels and Marlins. Since those teams changed names without changing location (Anaheim Angels became the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Florida Marlins became the Miami Marlins), Box-Toppers did not change the team code names.
