Other Player of the Game winners Friday include Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson, Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies and Rangers pitcher Nathan Eovaldi.

Player of the Day

Kurtz hit four home runs, including one three-run homer, in the 15-3 win over the Astros. Kurtz also doubled and went 6-for-6, scoring six times and driving in eight runs.

Kurtz earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.5 for the season, 200th among all players and 34th among American League batters.

Kurtz becomes the 20th player in Major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in a game and the second to do it in 2025. Eugenio Suárez of the Diamondbacks did it April 26 (4HR 4-4 4R 5BI) but did not win Player of the Game honors because the Diamondbacks lost to the Braves, 8-7 in 10 innings.

Kurtz recorded a +14.0 Box-Toppers game score Friday, highest for a batter earning Player of the Game honors in 2025, beating the previous leader, Brandon Nimmo of the Mets, who recorded a +11.0 game score April 28 in the 19-5 win over the Nationals (2HR 2B 4-6 4R 9BI).

Kurtz’s +14.0 game score seems to be the third-best by a batter in the 31 seasons of Box-Toppers tracking.

While Box-Toppers has records for each Player of the Game since the start of 1995, the data from actual game score records from box scores only goes back to the start of 2011. However, looking back at some of the most likely games to produce high Box-Toppers game scores for batters from 1995 to 2010 (games in which players had large home run, RBI or hit totals), it appears Kurtz’s is the third-best since 1995.

With that caveat, here are what are possibly the highest Box-Toppers game scores by batters earning Player of the Game honors since tracking began:

While Ohtani, Kurtz and Gennett all had +14.0 game scores, Ohtani ranks highest because he had both the most at bats (six) and most RBIs (10) in his game. Kurtz was second to Ohtani because he had fewer RBIs (eight vs. 10), but beats Gennett because he had more at bats (six vs. five).

Among the four players with +13.0 game scores, Green ranks highest because he had the most at bats among the four (six). Reynolds and Garcia had the same at-bat total (five), but Reynolds ranks ahead of Garcia because he had more RBIs (10 vs. eight). Duvall ranks fourth among the four batters with +13.0 game scores because he had the fewest at bats (four).

While Kurtz’s +14.0 game score is best among batters in 2025, it ranks 17th among all Player of the Game winners so far in the 1,554 games played so far this season. Pitchers have earned Player of the Game honors in 2025 with higher game scores on 16 occasions, including the highest game score of 2025: +20.0 by Tarik Skubal of the Tigers (CG 2H 0R 0BB 13K W in the 5-0 win over the Guardians) on May 25.

Kurtz becomes the ninth batter in 2025 to win overall Player of the Day honors. Pitchers have won on the other 110 days of the season so far. In the entire 2024 season, only five batters won overall Player of the Day honors.

National League Player of the Day is Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson.

National League Player of the Day

Diamondbacks pitcher Ryne Nelson struck out four over six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks, in the 1-0, 11-inning win over the Pirates.

Nelson earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 8.4 for the season, 28th among all players and 10th among NL pitchers.

National League Batter of the Day is Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies.

National League Batter of the Day

Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies hit two home runs and went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 12-5 win over the Yankees.

Schwarber earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 6.5 for the season, eighth among NL batters.

American League Batter of the Day

There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Nick Kurtz.

Rangers pitcher Nathan Eovaldi becomes the 13th player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2025 after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Notable

Rangers pitcher Nathan Eovaldi becomes the 13th player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2025 after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Eovaldi (5IP 3H 0R 4BB 7K W in the 8-3 win over the Braves) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.4 for the season, 13th among all players and sixth among AL pitchers.

This is Eovaldi’s third season with 10 or more points. His best season was 2021 with the Red Sox when he had 14.1 Box-Toppers points, sixth among AL pitchers. In 2024, he earned 13.0 points with the Rangers, 12th among AL pitchers. Eovaldi has 92.7 career Box-Toppers points, 114th-most among all players since tracking began in 1995 and ninth among active AL pitchers.

Willson Contreras of the Cardinals Friday earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day.

Also notable

Willson Contreras of the Cardinals Friday earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day and for third time in the past five days.

Contreras (2B 2-2 2R 0BI in the 3-0 win over the Padres) was also NL Player of the Day Thursday in the 9-7 win over the Padres (HR 2B 2-3 R 4BI) and on Monday in the 8-2 win over the Rockies (HR 2B 3-5 2R 2BI). He earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point Friday and has earned 3.7 over the past five days, giving him 5.7 for the season, 13th among NL batters.

Scoring

  • Kurtz earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Nelson earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day.

  • Schwarber earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day.

  • All of Friday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
