About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler leads Box-Toppers season player rankings for the 12th straight week, but his lead has narrowed.
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, who leads American League pitchers for the fifth week and ranks second overall, is now within 1.7 Box-Toppers points over Wheeler and could pass Wheeler for the overall lead in his next scheduled start Friday.
Meanwhile, Christian Yelich of the Brewers continues to lead National League batters and Riley Greene of the Tigers continues to lead AL batters.
Wheeler leads
Wheeler has 19.1 Box-Toppers points in 2025, picking up no points in the past week, leading the second-place Skubal (17.4 points). He leads NL pitchers ahead of second-place Paul Skenes of the Pirates (16.1 points).
Wheeler took the season lead in Box-Toppers points on May 11 and led by as many as 3.7 points in mid-July, but last earned Player of the Game honors July 21 and did not win Player of the Game honors in his last two starts, both Phillies losses.
Wheeler led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2024 with 21.4.
American League pitchers
Tarik Skubal of the Tigers leads for the fifth week with 17.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He leads over second-place AL pitcher Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox (14.1 points).
Skubal ranks second overall.
National League batters
Christian Yelich of the Brewers leads for the second week with 9.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs (9.5 points).
Yelich ranks 22nd among all players.
American League batters
Riley Greene of the Tigers leads AL batters for the 11th week with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. (Greene last earned Box-Toppers points July 2.) He leads ahead of second-place AL batter George Springer of the Blue Jays (8.7 points).

Box-Toppers almanac
Batters won Player of the Game honors in 37 of the 91 games played in the past week (40.7 percent) with pitchers winning the other 54 (59.3 percent).
Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season held steady from last week to this week at 39.3 percent (678 times in 1,725 total games). Pitchers have won Player of the Game honors in the other 1,047 games (60.7 percent).
Batters’ share of Box-Toppers points earned this season held steady at 39.4 percent this week (808.8 points out of 2,053.0 total awarded). Pitchers have won 60.6 percent of all points.
Last year, batters had the lowest share of points compared to pitchers (37.2 percent) in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
