About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
While Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler leads Box-Toppers season player rankings for the 14th straight week, his lead has shrunk to less than 1.0 Box-Toppers point and his return date from the injured list is uncertain.
Meanwhile, all Box-Toppers category leaders remain unchanged since last week, with American League pitching leader Tarik Skubal creeping within 0.7 points of Wheeler.
Other category leaders: Christian Yelich of the Brewers leads National League batters and José Ramírez of the Guardians leads AL batters.
Wheeler leads
Wheeler has 20.1 Box-Toppers points in 2025, picking up no points in the past week, leading second-place Skubal (19.4 points) by 0.7 points. He leads NL pitchers ahead of second-place Nick Pivetta of the Padres (17.7 points).
Wheeler underwent surgery on Monday to remove a blood clot from his right upper arm. He is on the 15-day injured list, but the team has indicated his timetable for return is uncertain.
Wheeler led all players in Box-Toppers points in 2024 with 21.4.
American League pitchers
Tarik Skubal of the Tigers leads for the seventh week with 19.4 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week. He leads over second-place AL pitcher Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox (14.1 points).
Skubal ranks second overall.
National League batters
Christian Yelich of the Brewers leads for the fourth week with 11.2 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.5 points in the past week. He leads over second-place Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs (9.5 points).
Yelich ranks 15th among all players.
American League batters
José Ramírez of the Guardians leads for the second week with 9.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads second-place Riley Greene of the Tigers (9.0 points).

Box-Toppers almanac
Batters won Player of the Game honors in 37 of the 96 games played in the past week (38.5 percent) with pitchers winning the other 59 (61.5 percent).
Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season held steady from 39.2 percent last week to 39.2 percent this week (750 times in 1,915 total games). Pitchers have won Player of the Game honors in the other 1,165 games (60.8 percent).
Batters’ share of Box-Toppers points earned this season decreased from 39.3 percent last week to 39.2 percent this week (893.9 points out of 2,277.8 total awarded). Pitchers have won 60.8 percent of all points.
Last year, batters had the lowest share of points compared to pitchers (37.2 percent) in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
