Tommy John, who died Sunday at age 83, is likely the most-mentioned retired player on Box-Toppers. That's despite retiring in 1989—years before Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995 and long before the blog launched in 2013. I used to tag him in every post, until I realized his name was almost always followed by “surgery.” I wasn’t writing about the man, but the pioneering 1974 elbow procedure that saved his career—and kept him pitching until age 46. I similarly stopped tagging Cy Young after realizing I was writing about the award, not the pitcher. Had I kept tagging either, they’d likely rival Clayton Kershaw (946 tags) and Max Scherzer (910) for Box-Toppers’ most-tagged player. Hardly a day passes without baseball fans invoking John's name. The procedure he risked his career to pioneer didn't just extend his own life in the game; it permanently reshaped modern pitching. Among active Major League pitchers, about 35 percent have had at least one Tommy John surgery, according to baseball injury analyst Jon Roegele's Tommy John Surgery List. Couple that legacy with 26 seasons, 288 wins (164 after the operation), a 3.34 ERA, and 2,245 strikeouts, and his Cooperstown omission remains glaring. Tommy John didn't just play baseball history—he changed its trajectory. If that isn't a Hall of Famer, I don't know what is.
