The Kansas City Royals rise to lead Box-Toppers team rankings, passing last week’s leader, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Here are Box-Toppers 2024 final team rankings through games of Thursday, April 18. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from April. 12 to 18. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank as of April 11.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers continue to lead National League teams (in second place overall) and the Philadelphia Phillies are the week’s hottest team (rising to third place overall).

Royals lead

Royals players have accumulated 16.4 Box-Toppers points in the first three weeks of the season, picking up 3.7 points in the past week, rising from second to first place overall. They lead American League teams for the second straight week.

The Royals have baseball’s sixth-best winning percentage (.632) and rank second in the AL Central, one game behind the Cleveland Guardians (.684), who are fifth in team rankings with 15.0 Box-Toppers points. The Atlanta Braves have baseball’s best winning percentage (.706) and are ninth in Box-Toppers team rankings with 13.5 Box-Toppers points.

The Royals rank ahead of the second-place AL team, Baltimore Orioles, fourth overall with 15.2 points.

The Royals are led by pitcher Brady Singer (3.0 points, 14th overall and seventh among AL pitchers). Royals top batter is Bobby Witt Jr. (1.7 points, fifth among AL batters). Eleven different Royals players have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2024.

Dodgers lead NL teams

Dodgers players have accumulated 16.2 Box-Toppers points and fall from first overall to second, 0.2 points behind the Royals. They pick up 2.5 points in the past week and rank first among NL teams, 0.1 point ahead of the second-place Philadelphia Phillies (16.1).

The Dodgers have the NL’s sixth-best winning percentage (.571), behind the overall leader Braves (.706).

The Dodgers are led by pitchers Tyler Glasnow and Evan Phillips, both with 3.0 Box-Toppers points on the season. Glasnow ranks 11th overall and fifth among NL pitchers, while Phillips ranks 20th overall, seventh among NL pitchers. (Though they both have 3.0 points in 2024, Glasnow ranks higher because he has more 2023 points—12.4 vs. 1.0.) Dodgers top-ranked batter is Mookie Betts (1.5 points, 11th among NL batters). Ten different Dodgers players have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2024.

Hottest team: Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies were the hottest team of the past week, picking up 6.7 Box-Toppers points in the past week, rising from eighth to third place overall. The five-spot jump was tied with two other teams for the biggest of the week with the New York Mets (from 16th to 11th with 13.2 points, earning 6.5 in the past week) and the Toronto Blue Jays (from 20th to 15th with 11.9 points, earning 5.4 in the past week).

The Phillies won four of their six games in the past week to pick up their 6.7 points:

  • On April 13, Kyle Schwarber earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game.

  • On April 15, Aaron Nola earned 2.0 points as overall Player of the Day.

  • On April 16, Ranger Suarez eared 2.0 points as overall Player of the Day.

  • On April 17, Cristopher Sanchez earned 1.7 points as NL Player of the Day.

Biggest fall: Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates fell seven spots in the past week, the biggest decline among all teams, from 10th last week to 17th this week with 11.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.5 in the past week.

Last place: White Sox

The Chicago White Sox fall from 29th to 30th and last place in Box-Toppers team rankings with 4.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. Last week’s last place team, the Miami Marlins, rise to 29th place this week with 4.0 points, picking up 2.0 in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
