Michael Chavis of the Nationals scored one run as a pinch runner but had no plate appearances in the 3-2 win over the Marlins.

Chavis had a +1.0 Box-Toppers game score, which was the same as teammate Jacob Young (0-0 R 0BI), who also scored a run as a pinch runner and had no plate appearances. Chavis won Player of the Game over Young on a rarely used tiebreaker in which fielders beat designated hitters—Chavis stayed in the game after pinch running to play first base, while Young pinch ran for the designated hitter and remained in that role. On top of this, no other NL batter earned Player of the Game honors in the 15 games played Saturday, which gave Chavis NL Batter of the Day honors, despite his low Box-Toppers game score and lack of actual batting.

Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels rises from second to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Ohtani (3B 2B 2-3 2R BI in the 5-3 win over the Mets) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 19.4 for the season, passing Braves pitcher Spencer Strider (19.1), who had only taken the lead Friday after Ohtani had led continuously since June 13.

This was Ohtani’s 16th Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of 2023 and his eighth as a designated hitter; he earned the other eight as a starting pitcher. Ohtani now has also earned 9.7 Box-Toppers points as a batter and 9.7 as a starting pitcher.

Earlier this week, Ohtani’s pitching season was shut down when it was learned he had a ligament tear in his pitching elbow. It is unclear if it will require surgery. However, Ohtani is continuing his season as designated hitter, earning his first Player of the Game honor at that spot since he did it July 27. It is also his first Player of the Game honor since Aug. 9, when he did it as a starting pitcher.

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Saturday’s win over the Mets.

Rankings

Two other players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earned Player of the Game honors Saturday:

Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Saturday’s win over the Padres.

  • Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta (5.1IP 2H 2R 3BB 9K W in the 5-4 win over the Padres) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 14.7 for the season, rising from sixth to fifth place overall and third among NL pitchers, behind Spencer Strider of the Braves (19.1) and Jesus Luzardo of the Marlins (15.1).

  • Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer (7IP 4H 2R BB 10K ND in the 6-2 win over the Twins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 14.4 for the season, rising from ninth to sixth place overall and third among AL pitchers, behind Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (19.4) and Kevin Gausman of the Blue Jays (14.7). Scherzer also now has 250.7 career Box-Toppers points, third among all players since player tracking began in 1995, behind Randy Johnson (282.5) and Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (269.4). Scherzer ranks second among active NL pitchers in career points behind Kershaw.

Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Saturday’s win over the Twins.

Notable

Orioles pitcher Kyle Bradish now has 12.0 Box-Toppers points for the season, 13th overall and seventh among AL pitchers, after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday (6IP 6H 2R BB 8K W in the 5-4 win over the Rockies).

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
