Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels rises from second to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Tuesday, both times as a batter.

Ohtani (2B 2-2 2R 0BI in the 7-3 win over the Rangers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 12.9 for the season, passing previous leader, Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman (12.0). Ohtani also passes Gausman to lead AL pitchers and extends his lead among AL batters over second-place Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5).

This is Ohtani’s 11th Player of the Game honor of 2023 and his sixth as designated hitter—the other five have come as a starting pitcher. Ohtani has now earned 7.2 of his Box-Toppers points as a batter and 5.7 as a starting pitcher. This is now the most points Ohtani has earned as a batter in a single season, passing the 6.5 points he earned in 2019 when he played only as a designated hitter and did not pitch because he was recovering from Tommy John surgery.

It also flips Ohtani’s status in Box-Toppers rankings to being primarily a batter, with most of his Player of the Game honors coming as a designated hitter rather than a starting pitcher. In both 2021 and 2022, Ohtani spent periods of both seasons ranked among batters but finished both years ranked only as a starting pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.

To rank in a certain category, a player must have more than 25 percent of their Player of the Game honors in that category. Ohtani qualifies to rank among both batters and pitchers since he has 54.5 percent of his Player of the Game honors as a batter and 45.5 percent as a pitcher.

This is Ohtani’s third stint atop Box-Toppers season player rankings in 2023. He also led from May 21 until losing the lead May 24 and on May 31 before being passed by Gausman on June 1.

It is the second straight day Ohtani has earned Player of the Game honors. He was Monday’s AL Batter of the Day (2HR SF 3-4 2R 4BI in the 9-6, 12-inning win over the Rangers). He’s earned 2.5 Box-Toppers points in the past two days and 3.5 in the last five days (he was also Player of the Game Friday, June 9, also as a batter).

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Tuesday’s win over the Rangers.

Wheeler

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler rises to seventh place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Wheeler (6IP 4H R BB 7K W in the 15-3 win over the Diamondbacks) earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 8.0 for the season. He ranks third among NL pitchers, behind Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks (8.7) and Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers (8.1).

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Tuesday’s win over the Diamondbacks.

Scoring

Happ and Henderson each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
