Gausman earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 10.0 for the season, rising from fourth to first place in season player rankings, passing previous leader Shohei Ohtani of the Angels, who only took the lead Wednesday. Gausman also takes the lead among American League pitchers ahead of Ohtani.

Gausman becomes the first player this season to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points. It is his fifth season with 10.0 or more points and third in a row. He also did it in 2016 with the Orioles (10.8 points, 16th among AL pitchers), in 2017 with the Orioles (11.1 points, 10th among AL pitchers), 2021 with the Giants (13.7 points, 11th among AL pitchers) and 2022 with the Blue Jays (12.7 points, 15th among AL pitchers).

This is the third time Gausman has led player rankings this season. He first took the lead April 12 before being passed April 16 and took the lead again April 23 before being passed April 26.

National League Player of the Day—Mets pitcher Max Scherzer struck out nine over seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned), five hits and one walk, in the 4-2 win over the Phillies.

Scherzer earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 5.7 for the season, ninth among NL pitchers.

Scherzer also now has 242.0 career Box-Toppers points, fourth among all players since 1995, and now is just 2.8 points away from the third-place player on the “all-time” career points list, Pedro Martinez (244.8). (It should be noted that Martinez’s career total is only from 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. If his entire career from 1992 were tracked, Martinez is projected to have 270 points.)

Scherzer ranks second among active players (and among active NL pitchers) in career points, behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (265.4).

National League Player of the Day—Mets pitcher Max Scherzer.

National League Batter of the Day—Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres hit three doubles and went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 10-1 win over the Marlins.

This is Tatis’s first Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor since Sept. 4, 2021. He earned no points in 2022, out injured part of the season and serving an 80-game suspension under baseball’s performance enhancing drug policy that extended into 2023. Tatis earned 10.2 Box-Toppers points in 2021, second among NL batters.

National League Batter of the Day—Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres.

American League Batter of the Day—Enrique Hernandez of the Red Sox homered and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 8-2 win over the Reds.

American League Batter of the Day—Enrique Hernandez of the Red Sox.

Debut—Diamondbacks pitcher Kevin Ginkel made his Box-Toppers debut Thursday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Ginkel (1IP 0H 0R 0BB K W in the 5-4 win over the Rockies) made his Major League debut Aug. 5, 2019, and was playing in his 128th career game.

Scoring—Gausman earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Scherzer earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Tatis and Hernandez each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Thursday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
