Also Friday, Shohei Ohtani of the Angels becomes the second player this season to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors as a batter. He maintains second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings.

Player of the Day—Montgomery struck out six over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 7-4 win over the Reds.

Montgomery earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 101st among all players and 33rd among National League pitchers.

American League Player of the Day—Isaac Paredes of the Rays.

American League Player of the Day—Isaac Paredes of the Rays hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, and doubled, in the 8-3 win over the Rangers. Paredes went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in six runs.

Paredes earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 6.2 for the season, third among AL batters, behind Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (10.4), who also earned Player of the Game honors Friday and Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5). Paredes now ranks just ahead of fourth-place AL batter, teammate Randy Arozarena (6.0).

National League Batter of the Day—Ke'Bryan Hayes of the Pirates.

National League Batter of the Day—Ke'Bryan Hayes of the Pirates hit two doubles and went 5-for-5, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 14-7 win over the Mets.

Both Hayes and AL Player of the Day Paredes had Box-Toppers game scores of +7.0 and Hayes actually ranked higher because he had more at bats (five vs. four). But Paredes earned more Box-Toppers points (1.7) as AL Player of the Day than Hayes as NL Batter of the Day (1.5).

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Isaac Paredes.

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s win over the Mariners.

Rankings—Shohei Ohtani of the Angels maintains second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Ohtani (HR 2B 3-4 R 2BI in the 5-4 win over the Mariners) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.4 for the season, trailing Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman (12.0). Ohtani also trails Gausman among AL pitchers. Ohtani extends his lead among AL batters, ahead of Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5).

Ohtani becomes the second player this season to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points along with Gausman. It is Ohtani’s third season with 10.0 points—he also did it in 2021 (16.1, third among AL pitchers) and 2022 (24.7, second overall).

This is Ohtani’s ninth Player of the Game honor of 2023 and his fourth as designated hitter; the other five have come as a starting pitcher. Ohtani has now earned 4.7 of his Box-Toppers points as a batter and 5.7 as a starting pitcher. Ohtani qualifies to rank among both pitchers and batters in Box-Toppers season player rankings because more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors have come in both categories—44.4 percent as a batter and 55.6 as a pitcher.

This is the second time Ohtani won Player of the Game honors as a designated hitter in a game in which he also served as starting pitcher. He also did it May 15. Rules changes in 2022 allowed Ohtani to play both positions in a game, allowing him to continue batting even after he was pulled as a pitcher.

But Ohtani had a lackluster -3.0 Box-Toppers game score Friday for pitching (5IP 3H 3R 5BB 6K ND) compared to his +2.0 game score for batting.

Notable—Two players won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Friday:

Orioles pitcher Felix Bautista is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s win over the Royals.

  • Orioles closing pitcher Felix Bautista (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K Sv in the 3-2 win over the Royals) was also Player of the Game Thursday (1IP H 0R 0BB 2K Sv in the 6-3 win over the Brewers). Bautista earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 6.0 for the season, extending his lead among AL closers, ahead of Jason Adam of the Rays (4.7).

  • Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (HR 2B 3-4 2R BI in the 10-9, 14-inning win over the Astros) was also AL Player of the Day Thursday (3HR 3-5 3R 5BI in the 10-3 win over the Red Sox). Ramirez earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 3.7 for the season, 15th among AL batters.

Jose Ramirez of the Guardians is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s win over the Astros.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
