Rays lead Box-Toppers team rankings for 4th week; Pirates rise to lead NL teams

The Tampa Bay Rays maintain their lead in Box-Toppers team rankings for the fourth straight week.

Here are Box-Toppers final 2023 team rankings through games of Thursday, April 27. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from April 21 to April 27. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank on April 20.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Pirates rise to lead National League teams and the Toronto Blue Jays are the week’s hottest team.

Rays players have accumulated 27.2 Box-Toppers points this season, picking up 5.5 points in the past week. They lead over the second-place Pirates (22.1) by 5.1 points and lead over second-place American League team, the Blue Jays (21.7) by 5.5 points. The Blue Jays rank third overall.

The Rays have baseball’s best winning percentage (0.808) and are led by pitcher Drew Rasmussen (5.0 Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players and fourth among AL pitchers). Top batter is Wander Franco (3.0 points, 28th overall and first among AL batters). There are 13 different Rays players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

The Pirates rise to lead NL teams this week, passing previous leader, the Milwaukee Brewers. Pirates players have accumulated 22.1 Box-Toppers points, picking up 6.2 in the past week, second overall. The Pirates ranked third last week. The Brewers have 18.7 points, picking up 2.0 in the past week, and fall to eighth overall, second among NL teams.

The Pirates have the best winning percentage among NL teams (.692) and are led by outfielder Bryan Reynolds (3.7 Box-Toppers points, 14th overall and first among NL batters). Pirates top pitcher is Vince Velasquez (3.4 points, fifth among NL pitchers). There are 12 different Pirates players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

The Toronto Blue Jays are the week’s hottest team, picking up 7.5 Box-Toppers points in the past week, most of any team. The Blue Jays have 21.7 Box-Toppers points for the season, third overall, rising from seventh place last week.

The Baltimore Orioles had the biggest jump of any team, rising nine spots from 14th to fifth in team rankings with 18.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 6.0 points in the past week.

The New York Mets had the biggest decline, falling seven spots from eighth to 15th place with 16.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.0 points in the past week.

The Oakland Athletics rank 30th and last in Box-Toppers team rankings for the second week in a row with 5.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up 2.5 points in the past week.

Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
