Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to fifth place in season player rankings.

Alcantara struck out 10 over eight scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 2-1 win over the Angels.

Alcantara earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 11.7 for the season, rising from eighth to fifth among all players. He rises to first place among National League pitchers, passing previous leader Joe Musgrove of the Padres (11.4). Musgrove has led NL pitchers since June 3, when he took the category lead from Alcantara.

Alcantara becomes the eighth player this season with 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points. It is his first season with 10.0 or more points. In 2021, he had 9.7 points with the Marlins, 27th among NL pitchers, his best previous season.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Tuesday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Alex Kirilloff.

Notable—Batters earned Player of the Game honors in 12 of the 15 games Tuesday, an unusually large number in a season in which pitchers are dominating.

Through the games of June 30, batters had won 39.18 percent of all Player of the Game honors (447 in 1,141 total games), while pitchers won 60.82 percent. That’s near the all-time record-low for share of Player of the Game honors won by batters (39.14 percent in 2014). Last year, batters won just 39.15 percent of all Player of the Game honors, the second-lowest in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

But Tuesday, batters more than doubled their season average share of Player of the Game honors won to 80 percent. Two weeks ago on June 21, batters also had an unusual one-day anomaly, winning 11 of 15 Player of the Game honors. That was also a Tuesday, which could be a day top starting pitchers are generally held in reserve for use on marquee weekend games, which could be why batters have more of an advantage on that day of the week. (Although last Tuesday, June 28, batters won only 5 of 16 Player of the Game honors, 31.25 percent of all games.)

Tuesday’s numbers are even more anomalous when compared to the previous two days—Sunday and Monday—when batters won Player of the Game honors only twice each day for a total of four times in 29 games, a rate of only 13.8 percent of all games. Combining the three previous days, Sunday through Tuesday, batters won Player of the Game honors in 36.4 percent of the 44 games played.

Scoring—Alcantara earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Kirilloff earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Muncy earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
