Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, extending his lead in season player rankings.

Also Wednesday, Braves pitcher Max Fried rises to fifth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors. He also rises to first place among National League pitchers.

Player of the Day—Ohtani struck out 10 over seven innings, allowing one run (none earned), two hits and three walks, in the 5-2 win over the Marlins.

Ohtani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 16.0 for the season, extending his player rankings lead over second-place player, Rays pitcher Shane McClanahan (13.4 points).

This is Ohtani’s 10th Player of the Game honor of the season and his seventh as a starting pitcher. The other three have come as a designated hitter. Ohtani still qualifies to rank among both pitchers and batters since he’s earned more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors in both categories. With Wednesday’s Player of the Day honor, he also extends his lead among AL batters, ahead of second-place Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (7.2 points). Ohtani now has 12.0 points as a pitcher and 4.0 points as a batter, neither enough to lead a category by themselves, but enough to rank first in both when combined.

In 2021, Ohtani earned 16.1 Box-Toppers points but was ranked only as a pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher (nine of 12).

Nationals pitcher Josiah Gray is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers NL Player of the Day.

National League Player of the Day—Nationals pitcher Josiah Gray struck out 11 over six innings, allowing two runs, four hits and one walk, in the 3-2 win over the Phillies.

Gray earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 4.7 for the season, 30th among NL pitchers.

Aaron Hicks of the Yankees is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—Aaron Hicks of the Yankees hit a grand slam, doubled and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 16-0 win over the Pirates.

This was his first Player of the Game honor since 2018, a season in which he earned 5.0 points in 137 games. He earned no points in 145 combined games played over 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Austin Slater of the Giants is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day.

National League Batter of the Day—Austin Slater of the Giants doubled and went 2-for-2, scoring once and driving in two runs, in the 7-5 win over the Diamondbacks.

Braves pitcher Max Fried is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Cardinals.

Rankings—Braves pitcher Max Fried rises from seventh to fifth in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Fried (6IP 5H 0R BB 4K W in the 3-0 win over the Cardinals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 12.0 for the season, rising to first place among NL pitchers, passing previous leader Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins (11.7 points), who only took the lead Tuesday.

Rays pitcher Corey Kluber is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Red Sox.

Notable—Rays pitcher Corey Kluber now has 123.1 career Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Kluber (6IP 3H 0R 0BB 5K W in the 7-1 win over the Red Sox) ranks 46th among all players in career points since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails 45th-ranked player Gary Sheffield (124.1). Kluber ranks 13th among active players in career points, fifth among active AL pitchers.

Kluber now has 9.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 13th among all players and seventh among AL pitchers.

Kody Clemens of the Tigers is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Guardians.

Debut—Kody Clemens of the Tigers made his Box-Toppers debut Wednesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Clemens (HR 2-3 2R 2BI in the 8-2 win over the Guardians) made his Major League debut May 31 and was playing in his 22nd career game.

Clemens is the son of Roger Clemens, who earned 164.8 Box-Toppers points from 1995 to 2007, 17th among all players in career points since the advent of Box-Toppers, 14th among all pitchers. It should be noted that Box-Toppers estimates he would have about 320 points if his entire career from 1984 were tracked.

Scoring—Ohtani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Gray earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Hicks and Slater each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
