Yankees’ Box-Toppers team rankings lead narrows as Dodgers, Astros make gains

The New York Yankees lead in Box-Toppers team rankings continued to narrow this week.

Here are Box-Toppers 2022 team rankings through games of Thursday, July 28. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from July 18 to 28. The column Wk ago shows the team's rank on July 17.

Both the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros gained on the Yankees this week. The Dodgers, ranked second, continue to lead all National League teams and the Astros, ranked third, are the week’s hottest team.

Yankees players have accumulated 87.8 Box-Toppers points, picking up 6.0 since the last team rankings report July 17 at the All-Star break. They lead all teams for the seventh straight week and lead AL teams for the 11th straight week. For the first time in a Box-Toppers team rankings report since April 28, the Yankees do not have baseball’s best winning percentage. This week they fall to second (.670) behind the Dodgers (.673).

Their lead has narrowed to 3.3 Box-Toppers points over the Dodgers. In the previous report July 17, their lead was 4.7 points and in the report before that, July 7, their lead was 10.7 points.

The Yankees are led by pitcher Gerrit Cole (11.4 Box-Toppers points, eighth among all players and fifth among AL pitchers). The Yankees top batter is Aaron Judge (6.5 Box-Toppers points, sixth among AL batters). There are 23 different Yankees players who have earned Player of the Game honors so far in 2022.

The Dodgers lead NL teams for the third week with 84.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up 7.4 points since July 17. The Dodgers maintain their second-place rank and rise past the Yankees to have baseball’s best winning percentage among NL teams (.673).

The Dodgers are led by pitcher Julio Urias (10.7 Box-Toppers points, ninth among all players and fourth among NL pitchers). The Dodgers top batter is Mookie Betts (8.0 Box-Toppers points, second among NL batters). There are 21 different Dodgers players who have earned Player of the Game honors so far in 2022.

The Houston Astros are the week’s hottest team, picking up 8.0 Box-Toppers points since July 17, most of any team. The Astros maintain their overall third-place rank with 80.3 Box-Toppers points.

The Toronto Blue Jays made the biggest jump in Box-Toppers team rankings this week, rising five spots from 14th to ninth with 63.8 Box-Toppers points, picking up 6.0 since July 17.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had the biggest decline in rankings, falling five spots from 24th to 29th place with 40.5 Box-Toppers points, with a net loss of 2.0 points since July 17. The Pirates earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point in a win July 23, but lost 3.0 points by trading catcher Michael Perez (2.0 points) and designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach (1.0 point) to the New York Mets.

The Cincinnati Reds fall from 28th to 30th and last place in Box-Toppers team rankings with 40.0 points, picking up 3.0 points in the past week. Last week’s lowest-ranked team, the Oakland Athletics, rise to 27th place with 41.7 points, picking up 6.7 points in the past week.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
