Player of the Day—Gray struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 5-2 win over the Athletics.

Gray earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, 74th among all players and 27th among American League pitchers.

National League Player of the Day—Jose Iglesias of the Rockies hit a three-run home run and went 3-for-6, scoring once and driving in six runs, in the 10-6 win over the Padres.

Iglesias earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 2.7 for the season, 39th among NL batters.

Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani (6IP 4H R 2BB 12K W in the 7-1 win over the Astros) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 17.0 for the season, to maintain first place overall.

This is Ohtani’s 11th Player of the Game honor of the season and his eighth as a starting pitcher. The other three have come as a designated hitter. Ohtani still qualifies to rank among both pitchers and batters since he’s earned more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors in both categories. However, if he earns Player of the Game honors as a pitcher one more time before earning another as a batter, he will no longer be qualified to rank as a batter—only three of his 12 Player of the Game honors, exactly 25 percent, would then come as a batter.

Similarly, in 2021, Ohtani earned 16.1 Box-Toppers points but finished the season ranked only as a pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher (nine of 12). However, during 2021, Ohtani qualified to be ranked as a batter from July 2 to Sept. 3, a period in which he earned more than 25 percent of his season’s Player of the Game honors as a batter.

While Ohtani has earned Player of the Game honors far more as a pitcher than a batter (eight vs. three), he has played far more games as a batter than a pitcher (86 vs. 15).

With Wednesday’s Player of the Day honor, Ohtani also extends his lead among AL batters, ahead of second-place Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (8.7 points). Ohtani now has 13.0 points as a pitcher and 4.0 points as a batter, neither enough to lead a category by themselves, but enough to rank first in both when combined.

Ohtani also now has already earned his highest single-season Box-Toppers point total (17.0), exceeding his previous high of 16.1 in 2021.

Rays pitcher Shane McClanahan is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Red Sox.

Rays pitcher Shane McClanahan (6.1IP 3H R 0BB 6K W in the 4-1 win over the Red Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 14.4 for the season, maintaining his second-place rank among all players and among all AL pitchers behind Ohtani (17.0).

Scoring—Gray earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Iglesias earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Suarez earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
