Ohtani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 13.0 for the season, passing previous leader, Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove (11.4). This is the third time this season Ohtani has led all players. He led from April 20 to April 28 and again from May 5 to June 1. Ohtani also extends his lead among both American League pitchers (ahead of second-place pitcher Shane McClanahan of the Rays with 10.7 points) and second-place batter Jose Ramirez of the Guardians with 7.2 points).
Ohtani had a Box-Toppers game score Wednesday of +18.0, which is the second-highest for a Player of the Game winner in 2022, behind only the +20.0 game score by Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw on April 13 (7IP 0H 0R 0BB K W in the 7-0 win over the Twins).
It comes one day after Ohtani had what would have been the third-highest game score for a batter earning Player of the Game honors this season. Ohtani racked up a +9.0 game score Tuesday (2HR 3-4 2R 8BI in the 12-11, 11-inning loss to the Royals), but did not earn Player of the Game honors because the Angels lost.
Ohtani has now earned Player of the Game honors eight times this season, five as a starting pitcher and three as a designated hitter. He qualifies to rank among both batters and pitchers in Box-Toppers points—players must have earned more than 25 percent of their Player of the Game honors at a position to be ranked at that position. In 2021, Ohtani earned 16.1 Box-Toppers points but was ranked only as a pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher (nine of 12).
National League Player of the Day—Braves pitcher Charlie Morton struck out 11 over seven innings, allowing two runs, three hits and no walks, in the 4-3 win over the Giants. Morton did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Braves trailed when he exited.
Morton earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 5.7 for the season, 15th among NL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day—Austin Hays of the Orioles homered, tripled, doubled and went 4-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 7-0, six-inning win over the Nationals.
Hays earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 4.0 for the season, 13th among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day—Jurickson Profar of the Padres went 4-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 10-4 win over the Diamondbacks.
Notable—Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Wednesday.
Freeman (HR 2-4 2R 2BI in the 8-4 win over the Reds) was also Player of the Game Tuesday in the 8-2 win over the Reds (3B 2B 3-5 R 5BI). He earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point Tuesday and 1.0 on Wednesday, giving him 4.5 for the season, ninth among NL batters.
Also notable—A day after batters unusually dominated Player of the Game winners (with 11 of 15 winners Tuesday), pitchers reasserted their dominance Wednesday, winning Player of the Game honors in 10 of the 15 games played.
Tuesday seems to have been an anomaly for batters, winning 73.3 percent of all games that day. Wednesday was a return to form for pitchers, winning 66.7 percent of the day’s top player honors.
Batters are languishing at an all-time record-low pace for earning Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors this season. Through the games of June 16, batters had won 37.6 percent of all Player of the Game honors (358 in 952 total games), while pitchers won 62.4 percent. That’s below the all-time record-low for share of Player of the Game honors won by batters (39.14 percent in 2014). Last year, batters won just 39.15 percent of all Player of the Game honors, the second-lowest in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.
Scoring—Ohtani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Morton earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Hays and Profar each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
