About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also Wednesday, three other players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after each earned Player of the Game honors—Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon (sixth place), Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert (seventh) and Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff (10th).

Player of the Day—Ohtani struck out 12 over six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, in the 6-0 win over the Astros.

Ohtani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, rising to first place overall, passing previous leader, Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove (4.0 points), who only took the lead Tuesday.

This is Ohtani’s third Player of the Game honor of 2022 and his first as a starting pitcher. His previous two honors (April 15 and April 16) came as a designated hitter (he earned 1.5 points each time as American League Batter of the Day).

In 2021, Ohtani earned Player of the Game honors 12 times, nine as a pitcher and three as a batter. Because he earned the overwhelming majority of his honors as a pitcher, he did not qualify to rank among batters, so though he had more Box-Toppers points than any batter that season (16.1), he didn’t have more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors as a batter to qualify to be ranked. He did rank third among AL pitchers.

This season, so far, Ohtani does rank among both pitchers and batters, with 66.7 percent of his Player of the Game honors as a batter and 33.3 percent as a pitcher. With 5.0 points, he extends his lead among AL pitchers, ahead of Logan Gilbert of the Mariners (3.0 points). He also rises to first place among batters, passing Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (3.2 points). Ramirez led AL batters in 2021 with 13.0 points.

Ohtani also doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in two runs Wednesday. But his Box-Toppers game score for batting (+1.0), is separate from and not included in his game score for pitching (+16.0) that was highest among Wednesday’s Player of the Game winners.

Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers NL Player of the Day.

National League Player of the Day—Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff struck out nine over six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks, in the 4-2 win over the Pirates.

Woodruff earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 2.7 for the season, rising to 10th among all players and sixth among NL pitchers. Woordruff ranked eighth overall in 2021 with 17.1 Box-Toppers points, sixth among NL pitchers.

Francisco Mejia of the Rays is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—Francisco Mejia of the Rays homered, doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 8-2, six-inning win over the Cubs.

Johan Camargo of the Phillies is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day.

National League Player of the Day—Johan Camargo of the Phillies hit a three-run homer and went 4-for-5, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 9-6 win over the Rockies.

Rankings—In addition to Ohtani and Woodruff, two other players rose into Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earned Player of the Game honors Wednesday:

Gose (1.2IP 0H 0R 0BB 4K W in the 2-1 win over the White Sox) earned his only other career Player of the Game honor April 28, 2016, as a centerfielder for the Tigers. Gose switched to pitching in the 2021 season.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
