About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Player of the Day—Kluber pitched a complete-game, no-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking one, in the 2-0 win over the Rangers.

Kluber earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season, 21st among all players and sixth among American League pitchers.

It is the season’s sixth no-hitter—the seventh, if you count Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner’s seven-inning no-hitter April 25. It is also the second no-hitter in two days after Tigers pitcher Spencer Turnbull no-hit the Mariners Tuesday.

Kluber had the third-best Box-Toppers game score (+17.0) among the six regular-length, nine-inning no-hitters (Bumgarner had a +14.0 game score in his seven-inning no-hitter). Kluber’s +17.0 game score also ranks as the seventh-best among Player of the Game winners so far this season. The top game score by a Player of the Game winner in 2021 is +22.0 by Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom on April 23.

Here are the game scores for the season’s other five no-hitters:

  • +21.0 by Orioles pitcher John Means on May 5, second-highest game score among all Player of the Game winners in 2021.

  • +19.0 by Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove on April 9, third-highest game score of the season.

  • +16.0 by Turnbull on May 18, the 10th-highest game score of the season.

  • +16.0 by Reds pitcher Wade Miley on May 7, the 10th-highest game score of the season.

  • +16.0 by White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon on April 14, the 11th-highest game score of the season. (Though Turnbull, Miley and Rodon all had +16.0 game scores in their no-hitters, Turnbull’s is ranked highest because he had the most strikeouts in his game (nine), Miley had the second-most (eight) and Rodon the third-most (seven).

Kluber also now has 114.1 career Box-Toppers points, 54th-most among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 2.0 points Wednesday, he passes five players on the “all-time” list—Kevin Brown (112.8), Sammy Sosa (113.2), Dan Haren (113.2), Chris Carpenter (113.3) and Royals pitcher Ervin Santana (113.4). Kluber now trails 53rd-ranked player Josh Beckett (114.9). Passing Santana, Kluber now ranks 13th among active, signed players in career points, fourth among active AL pitchers.

National League Player of the Day—Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove struck out 11 over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 3-0 win over the Rockies.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
