About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Phillies pitcher Cristopher Sánchez leads the Box-Toppers player rankings for a fifth consecutive week, while Cam Schlittler of the Yankees rises to lead American League pitchers.
The batting leaders remain unchanged, with Shohei Ohtani (Dodgers) pacing the National League and Nick Kurtz (Athletics) leading the AL.
Sánchez leads
Sánchez remains in first place overall with 13.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over Jacob Misiorowski of the Brewers (13.0), who is in second place overall and among NL pitchers.
American League pitchers
Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler jumps from fourth place last week to first place this week with 11.7 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Bryan Woo of the Mariners, who falls to second place with 10.4 points.
Schlittler ranks fourth overall.
National League batters
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers leads for the sixth week with 11.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He leads over second-place NL batter, Sal Stewart of the Reds (7.0 points).
Ohtani ranks fifth overall.
Ohtani has earned Player of the Game honors 10 times this season—three as a batter (3.0 points) and seven as a starting pitcher (8.7 points). Because at least 25% of his honors came from each role (30% batting, 70% pitching), he qualifies to rank at both positions with his full 11.7-point total.
Looked at individually, his 8.7 points as a pitcher would rank seventh among NL pitchers and his 3.0 points as a designated hitter would rank 33rd among NL batters.
American League batters
Nick Kurtz of the Athletics leads for the fourth week with 6.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place Dillon Dingler of the Tigers (5.0 points).
Kurtz ranks 39th overall.
Box-Toppers almanac
Batters’ share of Player of the Game honors increased this week. Batters won in 40 of the 93 games played (43.0%), while pitchers claimed 53 (57.0%).
Batters’ share of Box-Toppers points overall this season increased from 39.7% last week to 39.9% this week.
Batters have won fewer than 40% of all Box-Toppers points awarded in four of the past five seasons (surpassing it only in 2023 at 40.7%) and set a record-low share of 37.2% in 2024.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
