About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes leads the Box-Toppers player rankings report for a second week.
While Skenes briefly surrendered the top spot early in the week, he reclaimed it Tuesday to hold the overall lead for a second straight week. In the American League, José Soriano of the Angels returns to the top of the pitching leaderboard, while the league batting leaders remain unchanged.
Skenes leads
Skenes maintains his #1 ranking with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, adding 2.0 over the past week. He holds a one-point edge over Angels pitcher José Soriano (8.0 points) and remains the top-ranked NL pitcher, ahead of teammate Braxton Ashcraft (7.7 points).
American League pitchers
Angels pitcher José Soriano rises from second to first place with 8.0 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Max Fried of the Yankees, who falls to second place with 7.0 points. Fried is expected to miss at least two to three weeks with left elbow posterior soreness after exiting his Monday start following three innings of work.
Soriano ranks second overall.
National League batters
Michael Harris II of the Braves leads for the second week with 4.5 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads ahead of second-place Sal Stewart of the Reds (4.0 points).
Harris ranks 26th among all players.
American League batters
Jeremiah Jackson of the Orioles leads for the third week with 4.2 points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place Kazuma Okamoto of the Blue Jays (4.0 points).
Jackson ranks 27th overall.
Box-Toppers almanac
Pitchers dominated the week, winning 59 of the 91 Player of the Game honors (64.8%), dropping the season-long share for batters to 39.9%. Though this remains above the record-low 37.2% set in 2024, it marks a continuation of a bleak era for hitters: they are on track to finish below the 40% mark for the fifth time in six seasons (having surpassed it only in 2023 at 40.7%).
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who contributes most to their team’s victory. Using standard box score statistics, we identify the Player of the Game for every MLB contest. In the regular season, winners earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point, with bonus points awarded to the top overall and league-specific players of the day. More on how Box-Toppers works.
