Other Player of the Game winners Saturday include Astros pitcher Hunter Brown, Julio Rodríguez of the Mariners and Freddy Fermin of the Padres.
Player of the Day
Woodruff struck out eight over six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 4-1 win over the Pirates.

American League Player of the Day
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal struck out six over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk, in the 6-0 win over the White Sox.
Skubal earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 22.1 for the season, extending his lead in season player rankings and among AL pitchers.
He ranks ahead of second-place player, Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler (20.1 points), who is now out for the season with venous thoracic outlet syndrome. He ranks ahead of the second-place AL pitcher Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox (16.1 points).
Skubal is now 6.0 points ahead of Crochet and would hold the tiebreaking edge between the two, meaning it would take Crochet at least four starts, earning the maximum of 2.0 points each time, to pass Skubal. With Crochet projected to start Monday, he would likely have four starts at the most remaining this season.
The player with the greatest chance to pass Skubal is Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, whose 20.1 Box-Toppers points ranks third overall and second among NL pitchers. Skubal is 2.0 points ahead of Skenes and also holds the tiebreaking edge, meaning it would take Skenes at least two starts, earning a maximum of 2.0 points each time, to pass Skubal. Skenes likely has three starts remaining in 2025.
With 22.1 points, Skubal has surpassed his previous high total in single-season points. In 2024, he earned 21.1 Box-Toppers points, second overall and and first among AL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day
Julio Rodríguez of the Mariners hit two home runs and went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 10-2 win over the Braves.
Rodríguez earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 5.5 for the season, 21st among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day
Freddy Fermin of the Padres doubled and went 2-for-5, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 10-8 win over the Rockies.
Notable
Astros pitcher Hunter Brown now has 13.4 Box-Toppers points in 2025 after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.
Brown (6IP 4H 0R 3BB 8K W in the 11-0 win over the Rangers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers points and his 13.4 points is now 14th among all players, fifth among AL batters.
Debut
Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Saturday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:
Carlos Cortes of the Athletics (HR 2B 2-2 2R 3BI in the 17-4 win over the Angels) made his Major League debut July 23 and was playing in his 29th career game.
Cardinals pitcher Riley O'Brien (1IP 0H 0R 0BB K W in the 4-3 win over the Dodgers) made his Major League debut Sept. 28, 2021, and was playing in his 42nd career game.

Woodruff earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.
Skubal earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.
Rodríguez and Fermin each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day.
All of Saturday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
