In addition, Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal had a chance Thursday to all but secure Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors in his start, but leaves the door open a crack to at least one other player after failing to win Player of the Game honors.

Other Player of the Game winners Thursday include Yankees pitcher Max Fried, Brewers pitcher Quinn Priester, Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo and Liam Hicks of the Marlins.

Player of the Day

Greene pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking one, in the 1-0 win over the Cubs.

Greene earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 13.4 for the season, 18th among all players and 10th among National League pitchers.

American League Player of the Day

Yankees pitcher Max Fried struck out 13 over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 7-0 win over the Orioles.

Fried earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 13.4 for the season, 16th among all players and seventh among AL pitchers.

Fried recorded a +16.0 Box-Toppers game score Thursday, the same as Greene. But Greene won overall Player of the Day honors over Fried on a tiebreaker with more innings pitched—nine vs. seven.

American League Player of the Day is Yankees pitcher Max Fried.

National League Batter of the Day

Liam Hicks of the Marlins homered and went 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 9-7 win over the Rockies.

This was Hicks’ Box-Toppers debut, his first career Player of the Game honor. Hicks made his Major League debut March 28 and was playing in his 112th career game.

National League Batter of the Day is Liam Hicks of the Marlins.

American League Batter of the Day

There is no AL Batter of the Day for Thursday because no AL batters won Player of the Game honors in the 10 games completed.

Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto rises to seventh place in Box-Toppers season player rankings.

Rankings

Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto rises from eighth to seventh place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Thursday.

Yamamoto (5.1IP H 0R 6BB 7K ND in the 2-1 win over the Giants) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 16.7 for the season. He ranks fourth among NL pitchers.

Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal had a chance Thursday to all but secure Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors in his start.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, 37, announces he will retire at the end of 2025. His 279.8 career Box-Toppers points is 2nd overall since 1995, just 2.7 points behind Randy Johnson (282.5). With two scheduled starts left in 2025, Kershaw could still pass Johnson: Friday 9/19 vs. SF Friday 9/26 at SEA But he would need to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in both games (worth 1.0 B-T point) & earn bonus points (as NL Player of the Day or overall Player of the Day) in at least one, to pass or tie Johnson. (It should be noted that Johnson began his career in 1988, before the 1995 advent of Box-Toppers. The 282.5 career points include only Johnson's points earned between 1995 and his 2009 retirement. Projections for his actual career total since 1988 are about 380.) Kershaw leads active players in career Box-Toppers points: Kershaw 279.8 Max Scherzer, Blue Jays 256.7 Justin Verlander, Giants 249.0 Chris Sale, Braves 182.8 Gerrit Cole, Yankees 165.0 Jacob deGrom, Rangers 150.2 Yu Darvish, Padres 144.4 Zack Wheeler, Phillies 125.1 On June 27, 2021, Kershaw rose to 2nd place on Box-Toppers' career points list, passing Pedro Martinez (244.8), who fell to third & is now in fifth. Box-Toppers Player of the Year race

Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal had a chance Thursday to all but secure Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors in his start, but leaves the door open a crack to at least one other player after failing to win Player of the Game honors.

Skubal did not win Player of the Game honors because the Tigers lost, 3-1, to the Guardians. Skubal (6IP 7H R 2BB 9K ND) had a +4.0 Box-Toppers game score, but Player of the Game honors went to Guardians pitcher Tanner Bibee (6IP 4H R 2BB 9K W), with a +6.0 game score.

Skubal has 22.1 Box-Toppers points for the season, first place overall. With a little over a week remaining in the season, there is only one player with a realistic chance of passing him: Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet, who has 18.8 Box-Toppers points and ranks fourth among all players, second among American League pitchers.

Crochet likely has two starts remaining this season, including Friday. He would need to win Box-Toppers Player of the Day or AL Player of the Day in both starts to pass Skubal’s current total. If he earns two AL Player of the Day honors—at 1.7 points each—he would have 22.2 points, just ahead of Skubal’s current 22.1 points. He could max out his points for the season with two Player of the Day honors—worth 2.0 points each—giving him 22.8 points.

However, Skubal likely has one start remaining for the season and would only need to win Player of the Game honors—worth 1.0 point—to give him 23.1 points and put the race out of Crochet’s reach.

Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes (20.1 Box-Toppers points, third overall) could match Skubal’s 22.1 point total by winning overall Player of the Day honors in his likely final start Wednesday. However, in case of a tie, Skubal holds the tiebreaking advantage because he has more 2024 points than Skenes—21.1 vs. 13.0.

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler, currently in second place overall with 20.1 Box-Toppers points, is injured and out for the season and so cannot add to his Box-Toppers point total.

While all other starting pitchers are more than 4.0 points behind Skubal, there is a remote, unlikely possibility, with eight or nine games remaining, that any player could still play in every remaining game and earn overall Player of the Day honors in all of them, earning 2.0 points each time and suddenly accumulate an additional 16.0 to 18.0 points. Nothing like that has ever happened but it is technically not out of the realm of possibility, just super unlikely.

Notable

Two other players with more than 10 Box-Toppers points in 2025 earned Player of the Game honors Thursday:

  • Mariners pitcher Luis Castillo (6IP 3H 0R 0BB 3K W in the 2-0 win over the Royals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 14.1 for the season, 12th overall and fifth among AL pitchers.

  • Brewers pitcher Quinn Priester (5.2IP 3H 2R 2BB 10K ND in the 5-2 win over the Angels) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 11.0 for the season, 29th overall and 12th among NL pitchers.

Debut

Mets pitcher Jonah Tong also made his Box-Toppers debut Thursday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Tong (5IP 4H R 0ER 0BB 8K W in the 6-1 win over the Padres) made his Major League debut Aug. 29 and was playing in his fourth career game.

Scoring

  • Greene earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Fried earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day.

  • Hicks earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day.

  • All of Thursday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
