With the first phase of voting wrapping up next week for the 2025 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, here’s a look at Box-Toppers points leaders at each position in both leagues, through the games of Sunday, June 15.
I cast a single All-Star ballot to see if Box-Toppers leaders are represented on the ballot. There are some anomalies:
• Salvador Perez of the Royals has won most of his Player of the Game honors at first base but is on the ballot only as a catcher. So I put Christian Walker of the Astros at first base since he had the most 2025 Box-Toppers points (2.5) among AL first basemen on the ballot.
• I put Javier Báez of the Tigers at shortstop but he is on the ballot only as an outfielder. He did not rank highly enough to be listed among the top three outfielders. In his place at shortstop, I put J.P. Crawford of the Mariners, who had the most 2025 Box-Toppers points (3.5) among AL shortstops on the ballot.
• I put George Springer of the Blue Jays at designated hitter but he is on the ballot only as an outfielder. He did not rank highly enough to be listed among the top three outfielders. In his place at designated hitter, I put Ryan O’Hearn of the Orioles, who had the most 2025 Box-Toppers points (3.5) among AL DHs on the ballot.
• I put Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs as top-ranked NL outfielder, but he is on the ballot only as a designated hitter. In his place, I put Corbin Carroll of the Diamondbacks, who ranks fourth among NL outfielders with 4.2 points.
The first phase of fan All-Star voting closes June 26 and the second phase, with finalist voting only, runs from June 30 to July 2. Here is more information about how that works. The All-Star Game is Tuesday, July 15, at the Atlanta Braves’ home stadium, Truist Park.
Box-Toppers offers two perspectives on All-Star teams—the first includes the Box-Toppers points leaders at each position for the current 2025 season. The second includes the points leaders at each position for the combined 2024 and 2025 seasons.
The chart shows the leaders at each position in both the American League and National League for 2025 and 2024-25. There are nine players who make both the 2025 and 2024-25 All-Star teams, including:
AL second base—Brandon Lowe, Rays
AL outfield—Riley Greene, Tigers
AL outfield—Wilyer Abreu, Red Sox
AL designated hitter—George Springer, Blue Jays
AL starting pitcher—Tarik Skubal, Tigers
AL starting pitcher—Carlos Rodón, Yankees
NL second base—Ketel Marte, Diamondbacks
NL outfield—Seiya Suzuki, Cubs
NL starting pitcher—Zack Wheeler, Phillies
Both leagues have 14 spots each on Box-Toppers All-Star team—the customary five infield spots, three for outfield, four for starting pitchers plus one spot for closing pitcher and one spot for designated hitter.
Fans don’t get to pick pitchers for the All-Star Game (which doesn’t make sense), but Box-Toppers lists the top pitchers by league in Box-Toppers points for both 2025 and 2024-25.
Box-Toppers category leaders among All-Stars
Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler leads all players with 13.1 Box-Toppers points in 2025 and is the top-ranked 2025 NL All-Star pitcher. He also leads players over 2024-25 with 34.5 Box-Toppers points and is the top-ranked 2024-25 NL All-Star pitcher.
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal leads AL pitchers with 10.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025 and is the top-ranked 2025 AL All-Star pitcher. He also leads AL pitchers over 2024-25 with 31.8 Box-Toppers points and is the top-ranked 2024-25 AL All-Star pitcher.
Christian Yelich of the Brewers leads NL batters with 6.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025 and is the 2025 All-Star NL designated hitter.
Riley Greene of the Tigers leads AL batters with 6.5 Box-Toppers points in 2025 and is the top-ranked 2025 AL All-Star outfielder.
Willy Adames of the Giants leads NL batters over 2024-25 with 14.0 Box-Toppers points and is the 2024-25 All-Star NL shortstop.
Aaron Judge of the Yankees leads AL batters over 2024-25 with 16.5 Box-Toppers points and is the top-ranked 2024-25 AL All-Star outfielder.
Key home run leaders excluded
Box-Toppers’ 2025 All-Star team excludes some of the season’s key home run sluggers, including all six players with 20 or more homers as of June 15.
Here are those six players, their home run totals, their 2025 Box-Toppers point total and their ranking at their position in 2025 points:
Aaron Judge of the Yankees, 26 homers, 3.5 Box-Toppers points, sixth among AL outfielders.
Cal Raleigh of the Mariners, 26 homers, 2.0 Box-Toppers points, eighth among AL catchers.
Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers, 25 homers, 2.5 Box-Toppers points, 15th among NL designated hitters.
Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies, 22 homers, 3.0 Box-Toppers points, 11th among NL designated hitters.
Eugenio Suárez of the Diamondbacks, 21 homers, 3.0 Box-Toppers points, third among NL third basemen.
Corbin Carroll of the Diamondbacks, 20 homers, 4.2 Box-Toppers points, fourth among NL outfielders.
While all six of these players have earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors at least twice each so far this season, they simply haven’t been the key player in their team wins often enough to rank among the top in their league. However, the 70 or so games each team has played so far is a small sample size compared to a 162-game season, so many of them may rise to be among the leaders in their league positions as the season progresses.
Two of these six home run leaders for 2025 do make the 2024-25 All-Star team:
Aaron Judge leads AL outfielders with 16.5 Box-Toppers points over 2024-25.
Shohei Ohtani leads NL designated hitters with 13.5 Box-Toppers points over 2024-25.
Both of these players led their league’s batters in 2024. Judge led AL batters with 13.0 Box-Toppers points and Ohtani led NL batters with 11.0 Box-Toppers points. However, Ohtani earned just 2.0 Box-Toppers points in the first half of the 2024 season and did not even rank among the top 10 NL batters until Sept. 19, earning 7.0 of his 11.0 points for the season in a one-month, meteoric burst from Aug. 30 to Sept. 27, the day he took the lead.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
